Was looking for a good hotel near the beach for me and my g/f's 1 year anniversary next month.. Got some good suggestions like Santa Barbara, San Diego, etc..
In my thread, aluehrs suggested that Hotel Del Coronado would be a good place.

Looking at the website, rooms start at $250 and go way up from there.

However, I went to Hotwire and one of the listings was a 4.5 star resort for $165/night. I crossed my fingers and booked the room, and sure enough, it was the Hotel Del.

So I get 3 days, 2 nights in one of the world's top 10 resorts on America's #2 beach for $360. 😀

 
HOTEL DEL FOR $165?!?!?!?!? I'll have to start using Hotwire. I use Priceline, but haven't tried booking for San Diego. I'm going to San Diego Wednesday, and had Hotel Del reservations but had to cancel them because they're $265/night. I got the Wyndham Emerald for $142/night (still a great deal...comic convention rates). We have heard so much about the Hotel Del, and have wanted to go for so long. We snuck onto their beach once and toook a bunch of pictures, to pretend that we stayed there. You're gonna have a great time! Very jealous!

hmm ... so when you book with hotwire, you don't know what hotel you're getting until the very end? Just like priceline?

HOtwire is realy good. It shows you the # of stars it is rated, amenities, the area it is in and the price per night...then after you pay for it, it will tell you where you are staying. I stayed at Le Meridian hotel in Beverly Hills for $110/night.😀

Yep, Hotwire showed me a "R" (resort) with 4.5 stars. After a good amount of research I deduced that the only possibilities were Hotel Del, Marriott, or Loews Resort, but the latter two are only 4 star according to most places. 😀

I don't get it. I used Lodging.com last month to book a room in Detroit about 1 month in advance. I opted for the Hyatt since it was only a little more than some others there. Got it for $99.00 for a single room, no smoking, dbl. beds. When we arrived, I parked the car while my wife and sons checked in. The gal at the desk said the room would be $150.00! I came in shortly after and showed her my confirmation for the $99.00 rate, which she honored.

I checked Hotwire for a room in Detroit for a couple months from now. It listed a 3 1/2 star for $89.00. Big deal! No cancelations and I have no idea what hotel that is. For $10.00 more, I was able to cancel up to the same day and I KNEW where it was for!

So you're using your one example to show how Hotwire isn't that great?

- Used Hotwire to find a 3.5 star hotel in downtown San Francisco. $69 a night INCLUDING PARKING at a hotel 1 block away from Union Square and 2 blocks from Chinatown. Normal going rate $150 + parking fees

- See my initial post. $165 a night for a hotel going for at least $245 a night

Where did you find the possibilities of the hotels? Like where do you look to see which hotels around that area are rated?
 
Hotwire is useful but they'll probably give you one of their less desirable rooms. This was my experience when I stayed at a place in NYC.

that is a great deal. my department had Christmas party at Hotel Del before. we were treated greatly with great food and service. my gf had her prom at Hotel Del, and she had a great time as well. i used to go to the beach quite a bit when i first came to san diego, and it is indeed a beautiful beach.

i suggest a dinner cruise on the Hornblower. you will be treated to a nice dinner and dancing on the yacht, while cruising in San Diego bay. the yacht will cruise under the Coronado bridge twice (to and fro), with a view of Coronado Island and the downtown. you will enjoy it.

Conversely, you're using one example to say that it is! Wouldn't have been of any use to me at all, because I would NOT book a room I couldn't cancel without paying a fee, let alone forfeit the full price!

No, I used TWO examples.
And of all the vacations I've taken (75+) I can recall having to reschedule or cancel exactly two of them.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. Hotwire offers TRIP INSURANCE through an outside agency for < $20 ($16 in my case) so yes, you CAN cancel or reschedule. HAH!!! I WIN! 1 to nothing! Woo hoo!
 
Congrats! Are there any other sites like biddingfortravel? Just this last week, I helped my family bid for a hotel room in downtown DC the night before, and got the Marriot Rennaisance for $60. 😀

I'm visiting DC again for other reasons in two weeks, so I hope that PL helps me out again...but I'll have to check hotwire out too.
 
Just for sh|ts and giggles, I tried two more cities that I recently stayed at. Neither were even listed at Hotwire. They were Mackinaw City and Frankenmuth. Both in Michigan.

There is NO WAY I'll be booking a room and crossing my fingers... I DON'T gamble, not even the lottery!
