Today the final parts came in the mail from TCWO. An Epox 8RDA+, Athlon XP2000+ and a really nice heatsink. I quickly set it up and gave my dad my old Enermax case(now that I have an aluminum cheiftec). Put it together, installed the OS and Drivers and now he's surfing on it. It's very nice, considering his old system was a 200 Mhz Compaq. Here are the specs:

Old Computer:
Compaq 2240
200 Mhz K6-2
32 Megabytes SDR
2 GB HDD
On board video

New computer:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Epox 8RDA+ Mobo
256 MB DDRSDRAM
40 GB HDD (MAXTOR)
Speedstar A90 AGP graphics card

So he needs a new graphics card. What's a good graphics card under $100 that would be good for his system. I'm thinking an ATi Radeon 9000 Pro because it has AGP 8X and stuff. Either that or a Radeon 8500 LE. Or something else. He doesn't need anything fancy, like a Ti4200 or a Radeon 9500(Me on the other hand...), just something nice. What do you think?

Oh, and why does TCWO always pack in some lifesavers with their orders? Pretty cool, but freaky because they don't tell you about it...

Nice system! LifeSavers are good! I totally forgot they include those on orders!
Depends on what hes going to use the PC for...probably any AGP card is goin to be better than what he had!

There are some GF4-MX440s for under $100 that should be fine for your Dad's system. Newegg has at least 4 different brand versions. I've used them for two systems for people who mostly want to surf & do some light gaming. The 9000 pro or 8500 LE should also be good, although I had some driver conflict problems with a Radeon 7500 not too long ago so I tend to not use Radeons for non-tech people's systems.

TCWO always puts those Life Savers in their boxes, but I've never heard why. I guess they just want to do something extra for PR.

Have fun.

yeah, Gf4 Mx would be nice, or something older from ATI (something like the Radeon LE, which is basically a Radeon 7200 with Hyperz disabled (it can be reenabled via hack)).

Dude...itsa 200mhz pc. A g4mx would be a waste...That AGP slot is prolly at 1x at best...

Get a geforce2mx200 or something. That will cost you like 40 bucks and it'll be fine for that computer...

but there is no use on such a videocard for such a weak pc

I have a radeon9000pro and it's very nice if you can affor the $100 for it. depends on what your dad will be using it for. if it's just for surfing and e-mail- stuff like that then even a GF2 will do the trick. Light gaming use a GF4mx420-460 AGP8x versions score higher fps actually, but faster cards don't benefit from it check the benches from AT

Um...read the topic again. I need a new card for his new computer. The old one doesn't even have an AGP slot and only 1 PCI!

I agree ...

lol 😀

I can only recommend a ati card. I have an aiw7500 and it runs all the games I want, admitidly I'm not a gamer, but it has excelant 2d qualities. I think you can pick up a regular Radeon 7500 for about 75.00 in a retail store, should be cheaper online.
