VXD error in VFAT01 - Decreasing computer functionality

My brother at Uni went back after the summer holidays with a perfectly working computer. Unfortunately, all went wrong soon after returning. He got a BSOD saying something like:

VXD error in VFAT01

This was whilst he was trying to install Icewind Dale on his computer. It repeatedly refused to install, crashing and resetting itself.

He backed up all his data and formatted his hard-disk, clean install, Win 98SE latest drivers, Office 97, Winamp, other normal apps and then he tried Icewind Dale again.

It installed fine and he had about 2 hours of fun before it died again and refused to run at all. He uninstalled everything, then re-installed everything but it still kept failing.

Then windows itself died. So, he re-formatted etc everything again, and the computer got worse...

It wouldn't even install windows.

If anyone has some faintest hint at what might possibly be going wrong, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

The computer spec is:

Athlon 500
TNT2 M64
13 GB Maxtor HD
MSI motherboard
64 MB RAM
Sound Blaster PCI 128
NIC
V90 internal Modem

This computer was bought from a company (can't remember which) so it "should" be a good system... hmmm...

That's a very vague description of the problem. The VXD errors could be the result of software, hardware, or even "human error" for all I know. However, I might be able to help you figure out how to get it working again. Let me start by asking, "What do you mean by 'it wouldn't install windows'? Does it not respond when you type "setup"? Does it boot up? Does it give you error messages?" I'll check this thread every now and then to respond. That should be enough information to get people started.
