That GPS tech is far superior to current generation crap. Don't pass it off because it bears the Google logo.

Further, Google hires amazingly brilliant employees, and has very innovative ideas.

It was a joke....I firmly believe Google will own us all one day and have chips implanted in our brains to send advertising straight to our brains.

No offense, but the last thing I wanna do is sit and watch the simulated road trip route.

The only thing Nav needs to do is give correct directions.

Integrating Wifi/Celluar= most likely monthly fee.
Also free wifi isn't everywhere for the most part so if it does go via Celluar route, how much is that gonna cost us ?
Seeing as they'll most likely charge via data received/transmitted. It can cost quite a bit.

It doesn't store the data on the unit? I don't have audio (because I'm in the lab working on remote sensing 😀)... Seems like a way to keep milking you for money.

You'll probably be able to use your existing wireless phone to get the data if you'd like.

I had a similiar setup in my 2000 VW Jetta GLX carputer running Google Earth...

That does look really nice. I have a tomtom 300 and have been very happy, so I don't agree with his stance that this generation navs aren't any good. But I know that they are also improving in this direction with 3D maps of cities and such.

all it needs is a bluetooth connection so it can use my phone.

Hahaha, GTA - Real Life 😛

question..

why would gps ever need cellular or wifi connection?

does this mean that you can't get gps everywhere you go? that kinda suck for gps technology...

as you can see, I know nothing about gps...

That's exactly my point.
If they make it such that the consumer have to shell out money for downloading the maps and what not just for aesthetics when they have to pay 2000-3000 for the Navi Setup initially, that definitely won't fly with me.
Last time I checked data transferring via mobile phone is quite expensive, unless you have one of those unlimited monthly data plans.
Even then I think they're rather expensive.

There has been some news about incorporating wifi location with GPS so that wherever you go you can have precise location data. When you get into the city with tall buildings or in a tunnel a wifi system would help. With my GO 300, I rarely run into this problem because it is usually able to extrapolate my current position pretty accurately. New tomtom products (510/910 and One in europe) have a new Sirf Star III gps chipset which is a lot better at holding reception anyways. So I am not sure if Wifi is a long term solution or not... but I guess it would still apply to tunnels?

GPS doesn't. It triangulates your position based on the time it takes for the signal from the satellites to reach the antenna. The VW navigation system needs cellular to download maps.
