You just cant get over the fact that VW is making a nicer car can you? 🙂

haha, this is about the 8 or 9th thread ive seen ya start about the passat... I cant even count how many times ive heard you say that 'no car should EVER double in price'...

My advice to you is to just get over it, they are making it, and people are buying it. 🙂

I think the Wagon has a chance. How many V8 powered, AWD wagons, with all the bells and whistles, AND enough room to haul 4 adults comfortably can you buy for under $40,000?

Answer: None.

What I find ridiculous is Subaru. You can buy a Legacy Wagon for $20,000, or for "small" amount you can upgrade to the VDC wagon for $32,000.

What's that get you? Leather, .5L of displacement, some body cladding, 2 more cylinders, and a couple gizmos. All that for a $12,000 premium.

With the VW going from $22,300 to 38,400, I at least get a noticable increase in engine size, AWD, and a bunch more gizmos and gadgets.

I personally doubt that sales will be extrordinary, but I don't see them as the only ones trying to market a vehicle too expensively.

It's NOT nicer. Besides the W8, there isn't much to differentiate it between the regular 4Motion Passat. The W8 also guzzles gas like crazy for a car (about the same as our SUV😉). And you can only get 16" wheels until they bring the sport package over?? Bleh, waste O money😀 And with only 5,000 coming over good luck finding one.

The question is, do you NEED a 8 cylinder engine?? No. A 4Motion Passat Wagon is a better deal than this W8 version. I'd glady take a loaded 3-Series or A4 Wagon over a fugly Passat W8😀

As a matter of fact, the W8 Passat i sat in at my local dealer not only had 17" low prof's, but it also had navi & the Audi larger in dash computer... Their selling price? $38.5k

Btw, maybe you need to get your eyes checked cause its a georgous car... 🙂

It WAS a beautiful car before they screwed it over for the 2001.5 redesign. Now it is to "chromy" and the front end is rather hideous looking😉

I have an 1999 Passat (Pre-Chrome) GLS V6 - so thank you NSF4 for your implied approval. 😉

At first I wasn't too keen on the new design but I have easily grown to like it (except for the hideous reflectors in the bumper molding).

I might consider getting another Passat but only a V6 wagon.

VWOA (VW of America) and its dealer network are ill suited to sell either the Phateon or the W8 - $hit for that money, I'm with NSF4 - get an Audi A6 or S4.

Hell, how about 2 Mini Coopers? 😉

True, but substitute "SUVs" for "wagons" and there is a ton of competition in this price range, especially if you are willing to take a V6. Someone would have to dislike SUVs pretty strongly and really want 8 cylinders to pay the price for the wagon IMO.

... and this coming from a Honda/Toyota fanboy. What, you don't like anything without a bland, boring design? 😛

I personally think the Passat looks BETTER with all of that "chromy" stuff.

LOL. The Passat was clean and crisp looking without the chrome. Now they're trying to be like Buick (like the way Toyota sprayed chrome all over the Avalon...bleh)😀

SPARE THE CHROME!!!!!!!!! 😀

Well, do you need any of the oversized cars and engines that are sold in USA 😉? Smaller car (Jetta for example) with 2-liter engine is more than enough for 90% of the people. Yet they buy huge cars with enormous engines.

I've owned both an SUV and a wagon. After having my passat wagon, the ONLY advantage that an SUV has over a wagon is ride height.

The Passat W8 has more passenger space, more cargo space, better accelleration, and far better highway manners than the RX300 or Infiniti/Pathfinder. The MDX is a competitor, but it's just a glorfied minivan on stilts and doesn't have the spunk that the passat does.

BAH!! Gimme a Honda Pilot for $33,500 loaded with GPS and leather and it will swallow a Passat W8 in cargo space and cargo room 😀

That being said, there are LOTS of midsized SUV's (with more cargo space and room) for under $40,000 that make the W8 look overpriced.

MDX
Pilot
RX300
Highlander
Trailblazer/Envoy/Bravada
Explorer/Mountaineer
Grand Cherokee

I could go on and on...😉

and im sure you will too 🙂

Personally i didnt like the passat all that much till the new design... Ive had mine for over a year and i still get comments from people about how nice looking my car is, and how smooth and speedy it feels... One day you will see the light my friend. One day 🙂

Uh no. The RX300/Trailblazer/Grand Cherokee DO NOT have more cargo space and room than a Passat wagon. They have roughly 80 cubic feet of cargo area each. The passat has just shy of 100. The Passat also has one of the most spacious back seats that I have EVER had the pleasure of sitting in. You ever tried putting a 6'2 adult in the back seat of a grand Cherokee? HA!

As for gas milage, the W8 gets 19/27 MPG. Not something I'd complain about! That's 1MPG short of my 2.8L V6 in my '00 Passat wagon, and 7MPG gallon better than a Trailblazer, and a hell of a lot better than a Grand Cherokee or an Explorer equipped with a V8.

The Passat Wagon does NOT have 100 cubic feet of cargo space. The W6 has 38 cu ft with the rear seat up.

And Maximum luggage capacity with rear seats folded forward: 79.0 cu. ft. For comparision, the Explorer and Pilot each have around 90 cu ft.

http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/24741.htm#specifications

**NFS4 takes out toothpick and cleans his teeth** 😛

I just went by VW's specs - 98 cubic feet of interior cargo space.

Station wagons are rated by "luggage" space with seats up. SUV's are rated with "cargo" space with the seats down.

After the seats are folded down in my passat, I have more space in my Passat.

I've done in person comparisons, and I own a Passat, and I rented a Trailblazer for the weekend. I can fit more people and "stuff" in a Passat wagon than I can in a Trailblazer.
