Does anyone have any experence with the Golf or the Jeta with the TDI engine? There is only 90hp, which I find quite low. How's the performence? Acceleration and top speed?

They are nice cars. If you are not going to be racing the performance will be fine.

The diesel engine is supposed to get great mpg right? That would be enough to make me consider buying one. I remember reading a review of a diesel Golf with a standard transmission and they said the accleration was adequate, just that the "rocks in pail" sound of the engine was annoying after a while.

How would it compare to say a Honda Civic (117hp) or a Toyato Corolla (126hp)?

back in europe VW, Audi,... are selling more TDis then regular gasoline powered cars.
If you are lookin to cut your gas costs half then this is the car to get. The higher hp TDis like above 150 are also great performace wise but at 90hp you cant expect to much.
Tdi are usually very strong in the lower rpms but once you spin higher they loose their power pretty fast.
If you get a diesel be sure to get a TDI, the turbo helps a lot.

the TDi has tons of torque, which makes it feel like you are accelerating faster than you actually are. The MPG is a great stat though, upwards of 40, just dont put any gas in it =].

VW forums

read around there, from people who actually own them. not us computer geeks :)

anyway, the TDI is no rocket, but it is quite good for regular commuting. why? because of the torque. it is not a high reving engine, no diesels are, but how often do you rev to 6000 rpms, where hp is king? hardly ever. how often do you rev to 2000 rpms? every time you drive! and this is where all the torque hits; real low in the rpm range, giving you a good off-the-line pull. another bonus is the highway. in 5th gear you put along at like 2500 rpm's or so. the engine is quieter, gives great mileage, and with all that torque right around here, you can pass anything you need to without ever needing to downshift.

but read it from the experts. go visit the vw forums.

You gotta remember that diesel engines make all that tourque at MUCH lower RPMs therefore they dont need as much horsepower. INfact, the TDI makes nearly as much or the same amount of tourque as the cr6 does. Remember, you dont feel horsepower, you feel torque.

Once you drive a torquey car, it's hard to drive something else.
I've learned this through my dads boat; 1986 pontiac parisienne.
305 chevy making a paltry 150hp, but 250lb/ft torque @ 2400rpm
a torque pig that never needs to shift to pass @ highway speeds :D

The diesel engine is actually *quieter* at highway speeds since it is loafing along at 2000RPM's vs. a 4 cyl buzzing along at 3000-4000 RPMs. The fact that the engine doesn't have to work as hard overcomes the "chugging" sound of the diesel engine. It will actually be quieter on the highway.

At idle the diesel WILL be louder though.

BTW - the TDi's put out abou 155 pounds of torque. With a tuning box, you can be upwards of 300 ft. pounds of torque :Q
