Cross API & process sharing? That sounds very interesting!

Of course, I bet this don't come out until sometime in 2017...

Yes please to better multi-GPU support.

Vulkan needs to keep pushing innovation and competition in order to be/stay relevant. It's still early, but it sure doesn't look like anyone is taking Vulkan seriously. There are so many more DX12 games out now and upcoming that it looks like Vulkan will be a flash in the pan. If Vulkan can get a couple more major titles out the door soon, it would help. Maybe if Valve reworked all of their Source games? Released Half-Life 3? Portal 3? L4D3? LoL?

Is there any reason to choose vulcan over dx12? Isn't this just the next OpenGL?
Competition and new tech is fine, but is there any chance of it to be relevant compared to dx12?

Of course, Vulkan is not tied to a specific OS.

Which is why Microsoft is pushing so hard for W10/DX12/UWP/Xbone adoption. From the gamer perspective, Vulkan offers better choice and freedom. From the publisher perspective, DX12/UWP offers control and less risk... to some publishers more than others.

My personal opinion is that Vulkan will end up lagging far behind DX12 in the long run.

Basically all games that aim at anything else other than Windows/XBone only should use it in the future. As you asked in the next question...

Exactly. The kind of games that are using OpenGL now should use Vulkan in the future.

On one side, it mainly depends on how relevant OSX and SteamOS will be for the gaming market.
Developer adaption is another thing. If you program just for Windows, how much of a tooling advantage will DX12 have?

They need to make sure tools and documentation are as good as possible. And of course everyone needs to support it properly.

Those are the main things that kept more games from using openGL.

Since most Macs a severely limited in GPU power and even more expensive than a PC, I doubt it will be a major gaming platform. And as long as games run fine on Windows, I doubt steamOS has a chance. If it helps anything in the mobile world, then that is fine.

Vulkan isn't supported on MacOS either. They've gone with "Metal" instead.

Vulkan will be portable to other OS's besides windows, but the developers will still need to do the work (hence doom only being windows).

Same thing with OpenGL vs DX we've seen before. OpenGL / Vulkan are both available more places, but DX offers more features and has better tooling (inc Visual Studio).

Both are great, but most developers won't use either for a while because they are much lower level and require lots of knowledge of how GPUs and graphics in general actually work, not just basic calls from high level apis. (Many devs don't even make direct DX calls but use a wrapper like Unity).

Vulkan will run on Windows 7/8/8.1, not just Windows 10. I wonder if 7 is going to be another Windows XP, with it being the main OS of choice until three or four newer operating systems have been released.

When Android N hits with Vulkan the developer base will skyrocket. I wouldn't be surprised if the Nintendo NX didn't use Vulkan in some way. Hopefully it is a success on the PC too but if not oh well.
