Vsync makes how much difference for you in the timedemo of Doom 3?

I thought my Doom 3 benchmark numbers were a little low for my system compared to HardOCP's guide and then I ran the benchmarks without vsync and I matched the scores exactly.

My test:

...[CTRL+ALT+"`"] timedemo demo1...

1600x1200
High Quality(0AA+8AF)
All graphic options on
Vsync ON
40.0fps avg

1600x1200
High Quality(0AA+8AF)
All graphic options on
Vsync OFF
56.5fps avg

Such a big difference. Has anyone noticed this? How is the tearing without vsync while playing?

i am running my 9800XT (Cat 4.6) at stock speeds and Doom iii at 10x7 HiQ 8xAF/2xAA with everything 'on' except v-synch . . . no slowdowns or artifacting

i didn't notice ANY (visual) difference except a performance hit. (i almost never enable it an any games) . . . OTOH, a 'touch' of AA looks nice. 😉

Thanks for the reply. I was really worried at first that something was wrong with my numbers compared to the HardOCP guide until I turned VSYNC off. I don't think they said in their review but I guess that had VSYNC off as well.

in the game, vsynch is DISabled by default . . . (i haven't tried "Ultra")

just curious . . . does anyone find it really useful (overall)?;

I have mine set at 1600x1200 0xaa 8xAF at ultra and it runs fine. But once I turn vsync on, things start to get choppy. So only thing I can say is it's a big performance hit.

for some reason i get a lot of tearing, or whatever you call it without vsync. this is really the only game i've ever used vsync on. oh well. im getting about 30fps with it on.

heard about the artifacts. never used vsync, never noticed an artifact.

when its time for night, its time for doom.

It helps to enable triple buffering because without it, if the machine can't keep the framerate >= refresh rate, the framerate will drop to half of the refresh rate. Since none of our machines can keep the framerate at about 85 FPS with all the eye candy, we can assume that the framerate stays at half of the refresh rate most of the time without triple buffering. However, triple buffering is not a cure-all, it can still happen and it adds an input lag that some can notice (myself included).

where do i enable triple buffering? i remember seeing it somewhere, but now i can't find it.

edit: nm, i found it. i don't experience the lag you were talking about (at least it's not noticeable), so i'm happy 😉.

Is there any way to get over 60 FPS in the timedemo?

I seem to be locked at 60 FPR as the highest while running it.

Holy crap, I just did mine with vsync on and off.
10x7 High Quality 0AA:
vsync On: 49.1 fps
vsync Off: 72.2 fps!!!!

With 8X AA on:
vsync off: 19.3 fps
vsync on: 16.5fps

With 2x AA on:
vsync off: 63.5fps
vsync on: 40.9fps

12x10 2AA:
vsync Off: 48.5

I don't see how all these review sites like AT can do all the benchmarks that they do.. I got extremely bored just running those!

I played the game some w/o vsync and there was a good deal of tearing.

vsync should always be turned off for benchmarking as it othewise limits your framerate to your monitors refresh rate, but when in game it should be on for best image quality and wont impact in game framerate as long as you enable triple buffering. unfortunatly you can't use triple buffering on opengl games with a nvidia card, so unless you are have a radeon you have to pick between image quality and framerate.

Every game I play as Vsync on. I can't stand it off. I haven't even tried it off.

-AthlonXP 2600+ Radeon9800P
-High Quality
-800x600
-Vsync on
-Humus Tweak
-Cat 4.9
39.9fps

I wonder if this is related to the type of monitor. Before i got my lcd panel, i never used vsync on.

With the planar lcd, i have to enable vsync or it tears like crazy on quick pans. (16ms lcd)

Anyone else play doom w/o vsync on a lcd? Prob doesnt mean anything, but im just curious.

I've heard that triple buffering helps. I can't find it in the ATI control panel or the Rage panel. Where is it?

Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > 3D > OpenGL > Compatibility = Triple Buffering (Enabled/Disabled)

Apoppin, this is not directed at you as a slam, its in general of what I have seen in the gaming community.

Of course I do. I am truly suprised. With all the smart players out there I would think there would be more people that would understand the benefits of Vsync. Laugh at them knuckleheads. 90% of gamers are retards when it comes to Vsync. Just my opinion. 1.)No visual tearing. 2.)Smooth graphics. Screw the darn FPS number if the game doesn't look as good. As long as the mouse will move fast without lag back and forth in a FPS game then I am fine. EVERY game I play I use Vsync, I can't stand visual tearing. Would rather have a set FPS like 60 than just jump around and get slightly higher with visual tearing. I run my in game refresh rate at 100hz, which takes care of the 60fps limit with Vsync. Its like running a game without at least 2xAA on, its just horrible looking. What really gets me is all the smarties that tell others on them online games to turn off Vsync, "it kills your FPS", make sure your monitor is at 85hz or higher. Its all these guys that run there monitors at 60hz that bitch about Vsync. Cracks me up, then someone tells them to turn off Vsync, then they hate Vsync and pass the idiotic solution to the next person. Sorry I know this was a little rude, normally I would refrain from being rude on forums but, its just my opinion, it truly amazes me that lack of knowledge in this area.
