VPU recover errors with 9800pro in UT2k4

I just put together a new system (asus k8v deluxe, a64 3000+, radeon 9800pro, 1 gig of memory) and UT2k4 keeps haning and bringing up the VPU recovery window. I haven't gotten a chance to try a different game yet, but I'll do that soon and report back. In the meantime, does anyone know what normally causes that error? Any suggestions on how to get this fixed?

edit: sometimes I can play for over 15 minutes before this happens, other times it only takes 30 seconds

Question: Are you just saying that, or have you really heard that having vpu recover on can cause problems? I'm going to try it either way, but I'm still curious.

I brought the agp down to 4x and the game has been running fine for 20 minutes. If this doesn't work, I'll shut off vpu recover and see how it goes.

UT2k4 has been running perfectly for nearly an hour now at 4x AGP. Maybe that solved the problem. /crosses fingers

edit: locked up after an hour and a half, I'm going to disable vpu recovery and try it

Its known to cause problems. Its more trouble than its worth.

I disabled it and I got the same problem. The lockups seem to happen randomly. I'm going to try the 4.2 drivers now.

I'd get the same thing with my 64MB Radeon 8500 (retail 275/275) while playing UT2004. I'm betting it's either problems with game and/or drivers.

I should try the game on my laptop and see if the same thing happens with the mobile 9600, of which there are no options for VPU recover in the drivers.

fastwrites disabled

I tried that a little earlier, but I never got the chance to test it (ironically I had to go fix someone else's pc). I'll give that another go and see if it fixed the problems. What the heck does fastwrite even do?

Still getting lockups with fastwrite disabled. I just tried another game and I got lockups there too. Looks like this isn't limited to UT. This is great.

Tried older drivers, and I still get lockups. Sweet.

I can't play Call Of Duty, I'm having the same problem as you man 🙁. WTF happend to ATI's drivers? All I wanna do is play a few pucking games with my expensive as sh*t when first bought 9700Pro damnit!!!!!

I have the vpu recover/crashing problem in CoD but not in Ut 2K4 (thank god, onslaught>all). I tried a million things to no avail. Here's the list, most were suggested by someone:

Disable fastwrites
Change memory timings (A64 is picky supposedly)
Disable legacy usb (?)
Disable vpu recover
Disable agp 8x
Increase agp aperture
Decrease agp aperture
Tried drivers 3.2, 3.8, 3.9, 4.1, 4.2, omega 4.2's
Tried an ATI "CoD fix" driver (turned out to be the 3.9's again)
Tried changing all voltages
Tried new mobo drivers
Tried the south african raindance

Nothing fixed it 🙁. It's wierd too because CoD never crashed until I hooked up a second monitor to my 9700 Pro but after, even without the second monitor, no dice. On a side note, I uninstalled the 9700 Pro, used driver cleaner, and tried an old GF4 4200 and had the same problem. All I can think of is that its a mobo issue. I tried upping the agp voltage but I don't know if thats working or not, I have no way to verify it.

I have seen numerous topics on bb's about this issue too. ATI has entries, the CoD homepage has topics, and all the other hardware boards I check did too and I haven't seen a case yet where it got solved.

Looks like its gonna be yet another patch job for ATI and we will have to wait 'til 4.4 to come out. I dont mean to sound bitter, but COME ON!!!!
I'm starting to feel sorry for ATI users. No flame intended. I truly am.

Well I now have three threads going pertaining to this issue (this one, 9800 wattage requirement thread, and best $100 psu thread). I don't want them all to become the same, but that's sorta happening anyways, so what can I do. Anyways, I've basically narrowed my problem down to either a) a bad video card or b)not enough power/not a high enough quality power supply. Go here for details if you're interested.

Has anyone tried the ATI Cat 4.3's? Granted I havent played CoD and Ive only played the UT2k4 Demo... but Ive had no trouble with the 4.2's or 4.3's.

run UT2k4 in openGL... i have a radeon 8500 64mb and that solved all my problems (crashes w/ d3d)

to fix this, go to the UT2004.ini file and change the renderer devices so it looks like this:

[Engine.Engine]
;RenderDevice=D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=D3D9Drv.D3D9RenderDevice
;RenderDevice=Engine.NullRenderDevice
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
;RenderDevice=PixoDrv.PixoRenderDevice

With no semicolon on opengl, it will force the engine to render in opengl (by disabling d3d and enabling opengl). i can now run ut2k4 🙂

I only got that problem on my 9800XT when it is overheated and o/ced ,if ur case isnt a bad cooling case and it keeps doing that in 3D games i recommand u go back and ask them replace another one for u

your card is of which company?

Sapphire. And heat isn't the problem (well if it is something is wrong with the card). I thought that might be an issue, so I cranked up my psu fan, my 120 mm blowhole, my 80 mm fans, and I took the side of the case off. Still got the same problem.

I have this problem with any game on my PC i.e. Return To Castlewolfenstein, Star Wars Galaxies. Turning the VPU doesn't appear to resolve anything as when the game still crashes it doesn't exit to the dektop and you have to hard reboot. I would leave it turned on.
I have tried loads of various resolutions and I haven't resolved the problem yet (being going all week regarding this issue). Anti-Ailising off and Anti-Strophic filtering off - tried using the custom option and up'ing each time. No joy.

You could try checking the IRQ settings to see if any device is conflicting?

You should also try uninstalling the sound card drivers, if that doesn't fail take the sound card out and see if the games work (I am going to try this tomorrow). If it does work then just the onboard M/B sound ports.

This is the last action I am doing before I send it back to the company I bought it from. My card is the Sapphire model and my second ATI chipset purchase. First one was a 7500 and that worked fine. I think I will change to Nvidia as I now hear alot of people complain on how bad ATI drivers are.

Let me know how you get on as we could help each other resolve this problem...

[/b]:beer:CURE VPU RECOVERY PROBLEM
NO MORE THIS PROBLEM
The guilty is, almost shure, the ATI RECENT DRIVERS.

Hey guys I have found a cure. At lest for my system: atlon 2500+, radeon 8500 128 , win 2000 all extremely overclocked

In Prince of Persia the Sands of Time I got some bigs locks in the game and when I quit, I got the VPU recovery error message.
I Have uninstall completely the last catalist ATI driver that was on my PC and I have install old video driver
( catalyst 4.1 ) for my card and this problem is history. I now play this game at full resolution and full detail. I have try UT2004, 2003 and call of duty to.

The problem is the ATI recent drivers itself... They are crap!!! If you dont have the most recent card from ATI, you should have some old drivers that will resole this problem.
You can find them on Ati site on the bodom of the new catalist download page at /Additional Links/
/Previous ( your windows) Driver Versions/.
Dont forget to completely uninstall before the current driver.. control panel, Display driver etc. Do not just put the old driver over the new one.

We have to tell them than there drivers is still crap. The ATI card are better than the Nvidia ones but a lest they have good drivers.

Good luck.
Tell me if it work

CURE VPU RECOVERY

next to the previous message

If you have a new card or the driver that you had install was the one on cd I realy dont know wat to do.
You can try to install a previous driver but its not sure if it will work.

I resolve the problem ( for me) when I had remembered than this game had perfectly worked 4 months ago. The only diference in my system was the driver.
SO DO NOT RETURN YOU CARD TO THE COMPANY! It is not broken.

Be patient. Tell them and, eventualy, ATI will relese new drivers.
