Once a VPN is established, how easy is it to then browse the network that you are connected to? Is it just like browsing a local network?

It's just like browsing on the local network provided the client PC is configured with the appropriate network settings and that the VPN connection speed is adequate. I've setup a few offices to connect to each other using PIX501s and 768/768k DSL and you can tell that you aren't in the local office because of the speed, but all resources are available as if it was one LAN.
