VPN service? how much does it typically cost?

Surprised to see no one yet say they're running OpenVPN. I run it off my Raspberry Pi 2 and VPN in to my network from anywhere.

My BTGuard subscription was up a few days ago so I checked the ratings from TorrentFreak and PIA seemed to be one of the best in terms of privacy. Got a 1 year contract for about $40.

They have settings to block internet access if the connection goes down and preventing ip leaks but you have to go into the advanced settings, which isn't really a big deal. What I like is that you can change your location dynamically from the their system tray icon. So if you need to be in the EU or UK to view something, you can do it with a couple of clicks.

And of course there is no logging.

I pay $55/yr for a VPS, which runs my DNS server, web server, teamspeak server, etc, etc, etc (whatever I want) AND my VPN server.

Do you do anything that demands privacy on your VPN server?

I'm curious about how stuff is kept private when using a VPS as a VPN end-point, because the traffic is clear once it leaves the server.

If you had a ton of torrents and stuff flowing to that server, is there any protection that kind of VPN setup would offer that the dedicated no-log services can't beat? I mean, you can setup no log on your VPN server, but who's to say that the ISP/Server Farm isn't logging traffic and willing to submit to data requests from anyone, be it DMCA requests or from the Feds?

I'm definitely curious about that, because I've kicked around the idea of a VPS for multiple reasons, many of which follow in line with your reasons. But for now I am using PIA and have been genuinely happy with it.

The only time I've been inconvenienced by PIA is when trying to browse craigslist while connected. I've had to disconnect to view job postings and reconnect if I felt like I should.

I consider nothing that's done on the internet private. Even behind the confines of VPN.

I use my VPN to escape the confines of walled gardens, nothing more. Basically I'm considering my setup as private as any paid-for VPN service. They may claim additional privacy features, logging anonymity and whatnot, but honestly I don't give two craps especially for what I do. I get far more "value" out of my VPS than I do a dedicated VPN service. On the flipside it does mean that I have to maintain my own server and services.

Sure, sure. I get that privacy is not guaranteed and should not be truly expected. Not even in the dark net.

I use privateinternetaccess for torrents, but I use TOR + coffee shop (never the same one and make sure it has no camera) for my revolution planning.

My internet provider is rough. They actually block my service if they know that you're downloading something copyrighted.

No. I decided that 4k wasn't worth the trouble because it eats up all of my data. The image quality from a streaming 4k service isn't even all that great compared to 1080p.

Yeah 4K isn't worth much today, not if you aren't able to get the massive lesser-compressed files, which aren't on streaming services. Heck, I doubt any 4K option anywhere is up to snuff, not until 4K Blu-ray arrives. Until then, American backbones and carriers really aren't ready for 4K, and the high compression completely negates the benefits of the resolution increase.

PureVPN is running a sale, buy 1 year get 1 free.

$50.

Used them for a year already, no real complaint.

Do accept BTC.

My work has a points system which we can redeem for things like gift cards. I always turn the gift cards into PIA subscription. 😀 I mostly just use the VPN on my phone when I'm on public WiFi.
