VPN Question - LAN accessible with VPN enabled?

I've recently started using PIA VPN, but I don't have alot of technical knowledge with VPN. But from what I understand, when the VPN client is enabled on my machine, the machine should no longer be able to access my LAN. The only inconveniences are when I play online games and LAN-printer (Brother HL-2270DW). So I'd disable VPN when I did those tasks.

However, when I replaced my printer to Brother HLL2380DW (connected via ethernet), I noticed that I no longer needed to disable my VPN to print which baffled me.

I also tried this on a different machine, and same result. VPN client installed there, previous printer used to show as "offline" during VPN usage and "online" when I disable it. Now the new printer shows online regardless and I even downloaded the drivers with the VPN enabled.

Should I be able to see my LAN-connected devices on a machine that has VPN enabled? And why would it be printer dependent? There are options in PIA VPN client that kills internet connection if DNS leaks, which I enable, but I don't know if that means much.
