I'm trying to setup VPN access to my work network on my dual boot(Win2K/XP) home system according to the details provided by our IT department. This information is for Windows 2000.

I have no problem connecting on the Windows XP partition, but on the Windows 2000 side I get an error message saying "Error 792: the L2TP connection attempt failed because security negotiation timed out".

I also have no problems connecting using my work laptop which is running Win2K and plugged into the same home network. I'm connected to the 'net through cable and an SMC Barricade router.

What could be causing this problem?

Thanks.

Try checking & restart the IPSec Policy Agent & Routing and Remote Access Services to see if IPSec Policy Agent is on or off....may wan to check the Dependency while you are at it.

Try restarting this services: Control Panel > Services > IPSec Policy Agent ; Routing and Remote Access

See here for more info: Establishing an L2TP/IPSec Connection

I had come across that support article before I posted here and I had taken the steps listed in the resolution with no success.

In that article, it says that

"then stop and start the Routing and Remote Access service on the remote computer"

I have no control over the remote computer, and besides the VPN runs fine on the laptop and even on my PC when it is running Windows XP. It is just Win 2K that I have this problem.

Not sure how much this will help, I have the same problem. My XP laptop can connect to the VPN but my 2000 desktop can not.

Try disabling the LCP extensions by going to the properties of your dial up vpn connection on remote machine, networking tab, settings button.

If you ever get it working, let me know, i will do the same.
