VPN issues...help....

Once connected through a VPN how do you view files? Never setup a VPN but a friend of mine is having some issues with his figured I'd try to help him out...he's connected but can't view files is there some sorta trick to it? They use a domain at his second job but neither one of us is sure on what to do in order to actually view, change, and alter files.
