VPN help

Hi guys,

I am currently in the proces of getting a vpn setup on my workplace laptop but have some queries about it. I need access to the vpn network in the office but also require non-vpn access as well at times.

the vpn basically limits access to internet websites which i require accesss too. Is it possible to have 2 types of vpns?

or have 2 different windows login usernames

1 - enabling access to my work via vpn
2 - enabling normal laptop access - by passing internet vpn restrictions?

not sure what type of vpn you are doing but what you want to do is enable split tunneling. this allows traffic that needs to get thru vpn to go there, and everything else through your already present internet access.

Contact the IT Admin at your workplace. VPN's are usually restrictive this way for a reason

thanks guys. i talk to my IT admin at work and he said once vpn access is initiated on my laptop i can no longer go on vpn restricted sites (gmail, yahoomail ...)
Strangely enough the vpn restricts some of the most important data feeds i need for work. he recommended i dont use a vpn at all; however i need access to our intranet when away from work.

The only solution i can think of is having 2 laptops.

1 - with vpn - allowing access to the office network when traveling
2 - non vpn - which allows for unblocked internet access via the lan in the office

hopefully there is a better solution than this. any advice? thanks

There's no need for two separate computers unless you really have to use the office network and restricted Internet sites at the same time. Simply connect to the VPN when you need access to the office network, and access the Internet directly (without the VPN client) when you don't need to use the office network.

If you need access to both at the same time, you could fire up a virtual machine to do your non-VPN sanctioned browsing and the host can be tunneled in and access all of the required internal resources.

the tech guy for some reason kept saying it was impossible to do for some reason. He made it appear like im always on the vpn no matter what - which was inaccurate.

All i do is loginto the vpn when needed. thanks
