Hi ...

We are contemplating installing a VPN box at our office ... so the sales guy can log into our network from their hotel rooms.

The VPN box we are thinking about offers PPTP and IPSEC.

To use IPSEC .. we would need to install IPSEC client software on all the remote client laptops.

To use PPTP ... all we would need to do is give each remote user a username and password in the VPN box. They will use the Windows XP ... PPTP client to connect to the VPN box.

Do you recommend the PPTP solution as being safe ? I have heard some bad things about Microsoft's implementation of PPTP ... but that is only valid if the PPTP server was a MS server ... but ours is a standalone VPN box (running Linux I think).

Any suggestions ?

We use a PPTP linux server at work, and use win2k/winxp clients to connect into it, works like a champ. Just make sure you are using encryption :)

just my 2cents

The current implementaiton of PPTP is fine; just remember though that unlike IPSEC, everything gets routed through a PPTP connection, so all your users will be using your network for general internet usage when connected via PPTP.

I use PPTP VPN, and only my corporate intranet traffic goes through it. Internet traffic does not. There is an option in the PPTP client advanced TCP/IP properties. Uncheck the "use default gateway on remote network". It;s buried pretty deep in the menus.
