Edit Update March 19th, more to come soon. Does anyone have image hosting I can use? I've got many photos to show to go along with this post!

Alrighty guys, here's the deal:

I've got a VP912b and a 2005fp sitting on my desk. Ones getting returned soon enough. If you've got any questions or questions about answers I've given so far pls ask them! I won't have both monitors for much longer. I havn't decided which one to keep yet. I can take pictures or go more into details on stuff that's already been asked.

One thing I notice when playing games is that the 2005fp at it's native resolution of 1680 x 1050 is a few fps slower than the Viewsonic at 1280 x 1024. I'm only running a 128meg 9700pro overclocked though. So it's an older card, but... it's just to say you'd better be rocking a brand new card if you wanna play the latest games on native resolution. Both monitors seem to look like crap on anything other than the native. And if you wanna run AA or such to get rid of jagged edges in HL2 or anything, it'll be VERY important to have the latest hardware to go along with this monitor.

The Viewsonic looks sexier. It's got a sleek edge and nice tiny buttons. It keeps to a simple style and no big loud logos on it. The Dell's has some round / square / bevelled edges on it that just don't mix well aesthetically. It's got a lit up little "2" on the bottom meaning I'm on DVI which I don't like. And it's got a silver stand on a black monitor that's kindof ugly.

Q: Which monitor produces less ghosting?
A: Neither Monitor have any sort of ghosting that I can see. This includes fullscreen DVD watching and FPS and World of Warcraft.

Q: Which one has better color reproduction? More vivid colors?
A: More vivid colors would go to the Viewsonic. But in HL2 the 2005fp seems a little more rich, it seems to have deeper colors in the earthtones. But for contrast and brigtness and vivid, vp912b takes the cake.

Q: Which one produces the darkest blacks and the lightest whites?
A: The Viewsonic has much darker blacks and whiter whites. It's got a different finish on it though. If you have a window behind this monitor and you want dark blacks, forget it. I've got a fishtank at the other side of the room and at night I can see a hue / reflection kindof radiating on both monitors, but the viewsonic is worse.

Q: Which one has the better viewing angle?
A: The dell holds it's colors much better at wide angels. The viewsonics whites seem to turn yellowish when you get at higher angles.

Q: Which one has the best connectivity options?
A: The 2005fp has many more options including svideo, composite, and usb. I'll only be using DVI on either so for me either is fine, but most people would want to go with the 2005fp.

Q: Which company has the best dead pixel policy?
A: I talked to dell on the phone and withing 21 days you can return for any reason at all. Even if you just don't like the stand or something like that. Viewsonic canada told me 8 dead pixels.

Q: Which panel has the best rated color gamut?
A:correct me if I"m wrong but.. they're both 16.7M panels. To me they both seem to recreate colors as intended. My eye can't tell the difference.

Q: Which one is lighter?
A: Viewsonic by a bit.

Q: Which one did you feel better using while playing games? Why?
A: Dell, widescreen gaming I'm discovering is absolutely AMAZING. you get soo much more viewing space. It rocks. In world of warcraft I've got alot more space for buttons and UI addons. My screen gets cramped with all that jazz when playing on a regular aspect screen.

Q: Did you have any dead subpixels/pixels on arrival?
A: one stuck pixel on the viewsonic, but I nudged it out. The Dell has a dead black pixel in the right centre of the monitor which is QUITE visible on a white background.

Q: Which one has the best pivot options?
A: The 2005fp and Viewsonic both worked flawlessly for the actual pivot software. Easy to use. I had a huge beef with the 2005fp though, the stand adjustment doesn't seem smooth at all to me. I still can't figure out how to raise and lower the monitor lol. I'll have to read the manual. It came shipped in a higher position, and I slid the monitor down to almost desk level and it "snapped" in to position and now I can't figure out how to raise it up again. It seems stuck. The VP912b though on the other hand is spring loaded so that even with my baby finger I can raise and lower the height of the monitor easily. Very smooth and well designed imo.

Q: Which one has the best included software (like color calibration, pivot, etc.)
A: Both have good software, the dell package brought up a webbrowser window and junk which I didn't like too much. The Viewsonic was a clean install and real quick.

Q: Which one has the least backlight leakage?
A: They both have a tiny bit of leakage. The Dell has some in the top left corner, and the Viewsonic has a slight bit along the top. This is only visible on a completely black screen though. I'd take the leakage on the Vp912b over the dell though. The dell comes further into the screen.

Q: Which one has the best brightness/contrast stability (not sure if you can test this), like the test on Tom's Hardware Guide

Q: Which one has the best On Screen Display controls?
A: The Dell has ALOT of features in it like picture in picture. Unfortunately no TV tuner so I'm thinking I'll never use that feature. Both monitors use a similar on screen display control. I'm not personally in there much, only when a game is desperately dark. But both monitors came shipped on 100% brightness which i found odd.

Q: Which one do you prefer for text work/web surfing?
A: 2005fp because if you flip a widescreen it's DAMN tall lol when you pivot it.

Anyone else have any more questions?

I don't expect you to answer every last one of those but if you do great. That should get you started. ;) Thanks!

Ok well, those are some awsome questions, and I'll compare and post results just as soon as I get the 2005fp. As for the Vp912b, it was shipped flawessly. The monitor looks damn sexy ;) ! Small well packed box, no scratches etc. Out of the box it was a breeze to set up, no silly software or drivers, just plug and play. I can see that if you have it in a really bright room you might get some reflections on the panel but I'm in basement apartment so it's not an issue really. Easy to use buttons on the front for brightness contrast etc. It was shipped with 100% brightness which is WAY to intense. I turned it down quite a bit actually. at like85% now. gotta get back to class but photos and more coming tonight. =)

oh yeah, one dead pixel but it was easily nudged back into action hehe.

When you lower the monitor all the way, it will "click/lock" into place - this can be very helpful when moving the monitor. In any case, there is a button on the rear of the stand, and you must push it to raise the stand back up - if it doesn't seem to want to move, you should apply slight downward pressure on the monitor (I don't know if this is an issue when the panel is on the stand or not - I just had to do this when raising the stand when it was by itself :p)

nice job i didnt expect you to get it done so quickly. so which one is overall the best for graphics editing? overall for gaming? overall for text/word processing work? did you adjust the colors enough to be sure that one's better than the other? and yes your answer to the color gamut question is correct/makes sense.

xtknight,

yeah I played with both of the colors. The viewsonic is definately brighter and more vibrant. But the one thing I noticed later on tonight was this. Pixels seem quite larger on the Viewsonic. And World of Warcraft looked grainy on it. It looked much better on the 2005fp. The 2005fp is better for ANY text usage. Just turn it end to end and it absolutely rocks. I don't do graphic editing so I'm not too sure about that.

-hope this helps. =)

It's the difference in dot pitch that you're seeing, .255 for the Dell and .297 for the viewsonic. Smaller is better here.

Ok then! Thanks Tempus. Didn't read the specs on dpi actually. That makes perfect sense. I think I've made my decision then. After lots of testing, reading, web-surfing, and gaming...

The Dell 2005fp is hands down the winner. Even though it may be a tiny bit shorter in height, it makes up for it huge in width.

Even though the Dell has a dead pixel, I'm still gonna take it over the Viewsonic which has none.

I would highly reccomend both monitors to anyone. But since you can get the Dell for 600 canadian and the Viewsonic is 745CAD, I'd be stupid to spend more cash for a slightly inferior product just because the monitor looks prettier on my desk and matches my case and keyboard more.

if anyone ever reads this thread and has more questions, just send me an email at lemmon3841 at rogers dot com and I'd be pleased to share more.

Thanks for the questions and for helping me choose which one to keep. =0

-cheers

There should be a button on the back of the base of the monitor to allow it to move again.

I mailed Viewsonic and it's an 8bit panel.

I actually liked the base much more than the 2005fp. the dell is a silver base.. :(

but I kept the dell instead hehe

Viewsonic usually describes it as a 6+2bit panel, which basically means 6bits plus dithering.
