Isn't there some legal and ethical problems with having a debate moderator who is favoriting either candidate, especially when they stand to profit? I hope they bring in Jim Lehrer, and change the format to one like the first Presidential debate.

When I heard about this I thought she was a poor choice. There aren't enough journalists out there that they couldn't find one not writing a book on one of the candidates? Perception matters, and people already think the press is biased towards Obama. This is stupid stupid stupid.

Is this a pre-excuse for if Palin gets smashed in this debate? Everyone has a preference one way or another, you know that right? Yea, writing a book is a bit extreme, but still.

Ifill has moderated debates before. I think she even moderated a primary debate with Obama and Clinton.

I don't recall anything being said about her being biased back then. But surely she holds the same opinions of Obama and african americans now that she did back then.

Im not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying what is it about Ifil that we liked before but don't like now? Is it because she is writing a book about it?

Everyone here is setting the bar so low for Palin that if she pronounces her name correctly, it will be reported that she smashed Biden.

She moderated the VP debate in 2004. I can't imagine they didn't know this at least a year ago.

It does lend an appearance of partiality, but Ifill is a well-regarded professional with numerous stints as a debate moderator under her belt so I really don't expect her political views (whatever they may be) to play any significant role in this debate. At least, I hope not for Obama's sake.

Inexcusible. She needs to be kicked out that position. Nobody can argue with this. She is clearly very pro obama and should not be mediating a debate.

And if that doesn't work when Sarah heads back to govern Alaska after the election she can always ban that book from the library.

I don't think it's clear that she is very "pro-Obama"... she was quoted a few weeks ago as saying she wasn't completely convinced that Obama was ready to be President. She did write a very glowing article on Obama for Essence magazine, but that doesn't contitute proof, either.

I think the best thing would be for her to acknowledge the fact she has written a soon-to-be-released book about "the age of Obama" somehow to those watching the debate before it begins. I have no problems with even a known partisan moderating a debate as long as their bias is revealed in advance so those watching it can judge it based on that perspective.

Even though she's probably perfectly capable of moderating fairly, she should recuse herself. No matter how neutral her questioning is there are going to be people who claim she was biased, especially if it goes badly for Palin.

Ifill is a human being with her own set of opinions. She's also an experienced, respected, award winning journalist.

The only thing that's "inexcusable" is your presumption that she can't be an impartial moderator. It would be pretty obvious if anything she says or does during the debate is blatantly biased.

Of course, I expect such charges from the right wing apologists if she asks Palin anything tougher than her own name or which direction Russia is from her front porch.

A liberal black female moderator? WTF? How can Palin win? The deck is stacked against her. This is just offal, er awful.

Has the McCain campaign gone to the Supreme Court yet? I haven't heard a word from them complaining about Ifill.

Did Palin get a headache yet? She's about to be screwed....

I think a better solution would be for her to step down.
makes everyone look good by doing so

and it takes away any excuse of bias.

Hey, moron, both candidates had to agree on the moderator(s).
I guess McCain/Palin trust him.
