What should the machine do when the user fails to select a candidate on one of the choices? The "default" is probably just alphabetical.

That seems to be part of the problem here. Someone who choose straight Democrat ticket vote, would not specifically select Kerry under the President option, but if they press the blue enter the vote is defaulted/changed to Bush/Cheney.

No vote. You are allowed to not vote if you don't want to.

I am going with the moron theory here. Tweleve people out of 70,000 does not seem to indicate an instrument problem. Also, for those that don't know, Austin is a bastion of liberalism in Texas. Most people down there probably are voting democrat so a signifcant portion of those 70,000 votes are democrat which further affirms that those 12 are just idiots who shouldn't be voting anyhow.

It's SIMPLE SOFTWARE that anybody who has taken quarter of programming can write in a day, even in Basic.

Hello World.
Choice A
Choice B
Choice C
?

As someone who has written software for a highly regulated industry (slot machines) I can verify that there is a lot more going on under the hood than that. There are also a lot of hoops the makers of these machines had to jump through.

I'm sure you could make a voting application in a day. I would love to use it to vote because I can guarantee that 100% of all votes cast by everyone would be for my candidate. ;)

I'm suprised I have not heard the argument that having candidates listed in alphabetical order is a republican conspiracy.

I heard that at my school, many students who were registered Democrats wanted to change their voting locations, couldn't. Why you might ask? Because those taking registrations just "HAPPENED" to lose all those were Democrats. But this problem didn't "ARISE" with any Republican. Kinda funny, don't you think???
