Voter Turnout vs Party Leaning

I heard somewhere that the larger the voter turnout, the more the vote leans towards Democrat. Anyone see any stats concerning this?

If you find more detailed polls than you usually see you will notice there is a more general number of, say, a candidates support, but the one that is usually used is "likely" voters. Not surprisingly this number is not from what people respond when asked if they are going to vote, but actually a standard percentage mostly tied to party.

The biggest factor is that younger people are less likely to vote than older people, and younger people are overwhelmingly independent or democrat. So, when turnout goes up, it's a higher percentage of democrat-leaning overall.

That's not supported by ANY facts.

You always have to be careful with blanket statements or conclusions, because it depends on a lot of factors, but yes, in general, higher turnout is good for democrats. As others pointed out, many groups that traditionally support the dems (young voters, black voters, students) have also traditionally had fairly low turnout rates. If they decide (like in 2008) to turn out in large numbers, it means good things for the democrats.

That's the general rule of thumb, but the situation varies. In races where it's not a high profile election, it's often more a matter of the incumbent (regardless of D or R) wanting low turnout. High turnout means people are motivated (unhappy, angry) and there will be more votes for a change. I think this is one of those elections in a lot of the races.
