What constitutes evidence of fraud? It's a very nebulous concept under the best of circumstances. Your claim amounts to an argument that scarcity of evidence is evidence of scarcity. If you had asked someone in 1800 to estimate the amount of oil was available in all of earth's reservoirs, they would have given you an absurdly low number simply because there was no way to know at that time. Now, since people actually check, we have found quite a bit. The same holds for voter fraud: how can anyone even hazard a guess at the extent of voter fraud when there is no good way to check for voter fraud under the current rules?

Precisely. The conservative brain defect loves Bogeymen. The conservative mind is a mind that amplifies and focus on fear, the notion that somebody illegal may be voting. By this focus a conservative flatters his ego, that he or she is a virtuous voter and others are frauds. This constant need to find the other evil is what the conservative brain defect does. Who knows how much evil there might be until we drill and drill and drill and drill and drill. Conservatives are such wonderful virtuous people, seeing only the good in everything. When you hate yourself the world is evil.

Precisely. The liberal brain defect loves Bogeymen. The liberal mind is a mind that amplifies and focus on fear, the notion that it is impossible that somebody illegal may be voting. By this focus a liberal flatters his ego, that he or she is a virtuous voter and others are frauds. This constant need to find the other evil is what the liberal brain defect does. Handing out free IDs which would limit the potential for abusing the fundamental democratic process is considered racist and discriminatory by liberals. All I want is to make sure that my vote counts rather than being offset by someone who should not be legally allowed to vote.

Bullshit!

The voter ID laws that have been struck down where because the ID's were not free. Any non democrat hack will tell you the issue with voter ID laws are because of costs associated with obtaining the ID and the courts agree. The laws that were not overturned we're because reasonable accommodations were made in order to obtain the ID including having the ID be free.

Even after all of that voter ID laws still don't address the number one cause of fraud, absentee ballots.

But if you want to play the partisan bullshit game go for it.

There's been a voter id law in my state since before I could vote. The IDs are not free. And in fact last year they passed a law making it significantly more difficult to obtain an ID and applied the same rules to renewing an existing ID. In other words, I live in a GOP hellhole that's trying its hardest to disenfranchise voters. It kinda sucks.

Are the ID's required to vote? When did that law pass? Do you have a link?

The law in Texas, which would have given FREE voter IDs, was struck down because DOJ decided it disproportionately affected Hispanics. I have suggested sending a "mobile ID station" around to give people IDs for free at their homes. What objection do you have to that?

Issue the ID to the voter when they register.
ID is presented when they vote.

Lose the ID; pay for a replacement; the taxpayer footed the bill for the first one.
Show up without the ID; vote goes into the absentee bucket for verification at a later time as long as some ID is presented showing name, DOB and picture.

No discrimination
Nothing about a tax.
No rights are violated

You know every time I have voted here in Texas, not once have I ever been asked for my ID. In fact the only time I have seen someone ask for ID at the voter polls here, is when I went with a co-worker some years back who was in fact black, and he was asked for his ID, and I wasn't. I did think that was odd.. but he had his drivers license and whipped it out.

I do think that all this voter fraud crap is just that, crap. It is just another way to disenfranchise voters. This only came up when the Republicans were trying to rig voting in their favor for their candidate.

And the Democratic approach of helping those without IDs to vote while not making any efforts to actually help them get IDs is somehow "enfranchising?" How about using some of that liberal compassion to actually help people get those documents as a simple quality of life issue, instead of just seeing it as an evil "voter suppression" scheme?

What total BS. So the people who have gone as long as they have without any need for ID just don't know how bad their lives really are?

Can't believe we are rehashing all this nonsense again.

I have no issue with free ID. Where the problem arises is when additional restrictive requirements are put on people to qualify for those IDs. What documents are accepted etc... There were many cases of people who made several attempts to obtain ID in PA only to be refused time again.

It's the old GOP rinse, wash, and repeat until it sticks playbook. Except it never will.

PA had 8 months to get the documents. The state also had that same time to prepare.
Documents required to prove legal residence - the Federal government has such a list - how hard is it to find it?

both sides ignored the situation until the last moment.

Granted there will always be exceptions; instead of fighting the issue; the advocates should have spent the time/effort helping those that needed help.

Why? Why should anyone be forced to spend any time or effort whatsoever jumping through hoops for a corrupt law that has no material impact on reducing vote fraud? The real purpose of these laws is disenfranchising the elderly, minorities, and students. They fail to materially serve any legitimate purpose. The proper response to such laws is to strike them down, not to appease.

I agree with you on that. People who don't have State ID like a standard drivers license could be given "free of charge" if they show that they are in need of it especially for voting purposes a state issued ID. The problem is in most states like where I live, you have to come up with your birth certificate, in most cases a lot of elderly may not even have that, so they have to pay to get a certified copy from the office of vital records which in most cases costs up to 26 dollars. In addition to that there is transportation involved to go to the local DL or office designated to give that birth certificate, then another nominal fee to get their ID, and then time in the process. In other words if we simplified this process, and made this a free process for those who need the ID but cannot afford to do this, we should in fact provide it. We should also make it easy, and fast for these folks.

But since that is not what most republicans want, they will not want these things to happen, because what they really want is to create undo hardship and a "poll tax" in the form of requiring ID of those who never had to use a state issued ID before, and used their SS cards. In a nutshell discouraging valid voters.. and disenfranchising them.

Ooh yet another example of voter fraud that ID laws wouldn't prevent being used to push for voter ID laws. These never get old.

Why on earth would people fight so hard to pass a law that would have so little effect on voter fraud? Gee, maybe because preventing voter fraud isn't their goal, but suppressing unfriendly constituencies. You would think that the GOP response to losing all these elections would be to change so that more people would vote for them. Instead, they have decided to try and rig the system.
