Relatively small? We're the third most populous country on the planet. You ever done development on a large system? There's over 200 million voting age people on the planet, systems that handle that many records have to be extremely robust. And then you have the fact that each state has its own rules and laws. It's actually massively more complicated than you think it is.
Relatively small compared to the size of other data sets we routinely and accurately manage to keep track of and compile accurate results from. Google, Amazon, Facebook, the Federal Government, etc. could each easily handle the technical side with their current excess capacity. If the rumors of our "Total Information Awareness" systems are accurate the controversy surrounding the determination of who is eligible to vote is laughable.
It's definitely not massively more complicated than I think it is. It's massively more complicated than it needs to be.
