They have to let you vote, they cannot supress it. Check that fact out, please

They do, but their view is I have time prior to work (since polls open at 6:30 and I work at 7:30) or after work (since I get off at 4 and polls don't close until 8 IIRC). I am going to be going to go talk to a different manager when they get here, but as of now I don't expect work to let me go vote on work hours.

Then you should have filled out an absentee ballot.

Brother Siddhartha,

Not voting is the way. Governance by greed, avarice and ego is not the way. Voting is not in the eightfold path, so it is not the way. Voting is not involved with the 4 noble truths, so it is not the way. It is a participative incidental into the path that is not the way. Much tension, much deceit, and much unhappiness will come of this. Be well. Be calm.

And a good thing to point out is straight party ballots are a good example of what NOT to do. And there is the added fact on many electronic machines they are misreporting the straight party voted for, on both sides. So if you want to make sure your vote counts, take the time do do a little research and print out a candidate list online and see who is running and a brief summary of what they supposedly stand for. Then mark it, and take it with you to the polls. It sure beats being a straight party voter idiot.

I voted straight DEM. If I NEVER see another Republican it will be too soon. They are like the BUBONIC PLAGUE, and spread disease like the rats they are. ;)

You're right, but as I said in my last reply I had planned on going this weekend. My gf had a death in her family over the weekend, so I needed to be there for her and couldn't go vote. As much as I am all for voting, there are some things that are more important and that happened to be one of them.

They're walking a very thin line there. I have the same issue, but I commute an hour each way so I can't go before work, but I will be home long before the polls close, and hopefully the line will be short.
Go vote, check you rights on this, but don't lose your job (although firing someone so they can go vote can bring a lawsuit). If you have time after work, do it, don't make voting a burden, make it a good thing to do.

I believe in voting rights, and casting a vote every election. I have done so every election since I turned 18, and very strongly am in favor of voting regardless of who it is (provided you know about the option, because voting for topics you know nothing of doesn't help the system as ZV said). I am going to be talking with every manager boss I can talk to (and HR if none of them will work with me) up to the department manager. I will have all my work done by noon for the sole reason to go vote, but I don't see them saying "okay go vote" even though my work is done.

Sorry man, did not mean to imply anything at all. I hope you get the chance to get out at lunch and vote. I don't live close enough to work to do that.

Didn't think you were implying anything at all :)

I just want to vote, but due to a death in my gf's family last week I had other things that kept me from voting over the weekend as I had planned. So now I don't know when I will be able to today :(... blah...

Sorry to hear about the death, I'm sure you'll get a chance, just remember, they cannot keep you at work when you request to vote, they can look back on it negatively, but I'm pretty sure you can do it at will, just within common sense.

I didn't imply you were an idiot. You know where your priorities lie. And I also know it's embarrassing to admit to be voting just for the hot babe who looks like Tina Fey.

I've actually been around here for quite some time.
I'm not a huge McCain fan, but Obama scares the hell out of me.
IMO he's done absolutely nothing that qualifies him him even remotely to be President.
What do we know of him? His associations with shady characters bothers me, and I don't have much more to go on about him, because we just don't know. He talks a great game and he's obviously a very skilled and polished speaker and campaigner, but that doesn't get it done in my book. His economic ideas reek of socialism to me and scare me as well. He speaks in this grand way about a bright future, etc. which obviously moving to many people and resounds with them, but I don't see the substance. There's just no track record.

It's ok to have your opinion. The good news is that you live in NJ where Obama will win.

Yes, I'm sure he will win NJ easily, but I still do my part.

Eugene Volokh makes an interesting argument in favor of party-line voting. I'm not sure that I buy his reasoning fully, but it's quite well-written.

I voted today at around 8:15, and it was amazingly painless - my polling place was well-organized and there was no line at all for pre-registered voters (of whom I am one). I thought it was interesting there were a lot of people lined up to register at the polls, which hasn't typically been the case in most elections I've voted in in the past. I was in and out in about ten minutes, and the only reason it took that long was that I voted in most of the judicial elections, even voting for unopposed incumbents who I happen to like. The only category I skipped was the school board candidates, who I haven't researched and don't really care about, since I don't have kids.
