i think im going to give giganews a run. i used my isp's for years, didnt like the retention then signed up with newshosting for a year. but their speeds got really lethargic the past few months so i cancelled and went back to my isp. but im needing good retention again and have heard a lot of positive things about giganews so i think im going to give them a run next.

I wrote up a little usenet user guide for a few of my friends who wanted to try it out - if anyone's interested I'll be glad to post it here (assuming it's not in violation of any AT rules). Usenet is fairly simple once you get used to it, but there is a much steeper learning curve than Kazaa, or even BT.

Most ISPs have their own usenet access.

However, it's not 1/10th of the retention of a usenet service.

Yep except for maybe Verzion but even then the way newsgroups providers are upgrading their retention now it really isn't anymore.

Even though Usenet doesn't exist, I like UsenetServer, only because of their plans. The $3 for 3 days is great, since I really only download chunks at a time. The last time I got the 3-day plan, I downloaded 100GB+. I just save everything into one big batch on Grabit, then when I'm ready (enough stuff to download), I subscribe for the three days ;).

However, if we're talking purely service, I like Giganews or Newshosting.

A while ago I bought a years worth of 100proofnews unlimited for like $100. It's been very good & fast for me, but they just raised prices and put in a 30GB cap. So when my year is up I'll have to shop around again.

How can usenet providers give away unlimited upload bandwidth?
