Don't know if this was posted or not but noticed it on SD and for slightly cheaper.

Can't deny the price of this system even if the monitor is questionable.

VOSTRO

If for one think the guys on the SD forums are mostly morons, a lot of them are claiming that this is not even a deal and this is Dells regular price, however I for one know this is not true since last week I was looking at the Vostro and they were indeed this price minus a monitor. They also seem to think that other retailers have similarly priced models with better CPU's. I had to post back asking them to link me to a sub 400
system with a Monitor and a faster CPU, cant wait to see what crap they come up with when they reply.

Anyways someone also mentioned that there will be another Vostro on sale tomorrow (20min) that is a bit more but includes a 4500 cpu, 2gig, and a dvdrw.
For the $379 however I feel you are getting a heck of a deal.

I am thinking of getting this for a gift for someone. Only marginal upgrades that seem somewhat worthwhile are the $30 monitor upgrade to a 20" or the $30 upgrade to the 2160 CPU. I was thinking of ordering some of the $40 2gb ram kits as well and going with Vista for the OS, but since I am cheap, and this is a gift I probably will just stick with the 1gb and XP.

Decent deal. The deal a month back was better though. I got the 20" Screen, E4500, 2GB Ram, 250GB HD and 8300GS for $500 shipped with Next Day air.

IMO the monitor upgrade is worth it. The base 19" monitor only has VGA input. The 20" widescreen (207WFP) has VGA and DVI (and even comes with DVI cables unlike some cheap monitors on the market).

The CPU upgrade probably won't be worth it... especially if you overclock that bad boy. 😉

This is incorrect. The 19" monitor that comes with this package (E198WFPv) has both a VGA and DVI port and includes both cables.

You are right and I was wrong. The previous deal was for a 19" normal aspect analog only monitor. This one comes with a 19" widescreen that does VGA and DVI. Alternately you can get a TrueLife 19" widescreen at no additional cost, which is basically a glossy screen like what many consumer notebooks have these days. $30 extra for a 20" widescreen.

The EPP was slightly better than this; jumped on it instead.

Inspiron 530
C2D E6550
2GB
250GB
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
GMA 3100
Vista Premium
Dell SP2208WFP 22" LCD
$100 Gift Card

$548.95 shipped

The EPP deal is dead now, too.

These Vostro's can be turned into a very decent gaming rig. I ordered one of these systems plus an ATI 3870 for a friend of mine. The PS doesn't come with any 6-pin cables, so I ordered a pair of SATA => Molex adapters and a dual Molex => PCIe adapter from SVCompucycle and was in business. No stability issues whatsoever. I would've been happier with a straight dual SATA => PCIe cable, but this arrangement seems to work just fine.

Just in case anyone was wondering what the system specs are:

Vostro 200

E4500
Single SATA DVD/RW
Single SATA Hard drive
300W power supply with 4 SATA connectors + 1 floppy power connector
Visiontek ATI 3870

I don't think I would care to add anything else. Dell's 300w power supplies have always seemed to be a bit conservative on their power ratings, but that's still a fairly powerful system running on the stock PS.

OMG $550 shipped and they toss in a $100 GC? That is uber hot! Heck, I would have gotten another one, parted out the CPU and video card, tossed in an E2140 or Celeron 420, overclock it...

The motherboard has an integrated video card, which I opted for right now. It was $42.50 extra for a cheapo GeForce 8300; I decided to save my money for a better aftermarket card. Might even be able to use my $100 GC towards one if Dell has any good deals after Christmas.

I can't see the expansion slots though? Anyone have a listing somewhere?

I'm pretty sure it has one PCI-E 16x, one PCI-E 1x and two PCI. Don't feel like going down to my freezing garage to check though...

These come with a simplified Foxconn G33M board, AFAIK.

ZAP,
BSEL mod possible with e2140?

Yes. You can do the 1066FSB or 1333FSB BSEL mod, for 2.13GHz or 2.66GHz respectively (stock=1.60GHz). I would suggest aiming for the 1066FSB mod first, for the following reasons:

- You need to do that first before the 1333FSB mod anyways.

- Adding 1333FSB mod is pretty tough IMO.

- 2.66GHz seems to be borderline for needing more volts.

However, feel free to do 1333FSB mod anyways! Have fun and let us know your results!
