Well, so far it seems pretty good. I still have some tweaking to do, I haven't really messed with it much. I have been using the Rage3d forums for some tips. Without messing with it much, I got a 3275 in 3dmark, which I think could be better. But I plan on getting another 128MB of Ram soon, so that might help out a little bit.

I wiped my dual boot and did a single install of Win 98SE, adding the Radeon first. I am in the process of restoring everything. I will let you guys know how it goes, and any tips on maxing the card out would be appreciated.

Jethro:

agreed on the "better to have and not need" concept. But my attitude is and always will be "buy AFTER the features are in games I like"

if NFS-Porsche or Quake3 came out wiht some hardcore Dot3 support, I'd dump the 5500 like a pile of poop.

re: OEM support - yep, even without OEM support, if the 5500 came out to compete with the DDr Ge256, 3dfx will still be around today, I'm quite sure.

re: your 5500 benchmarks, you're talking oldass drivers there bud. The 5500 has gotten 10-15 fps faster in Q3.

The stuff regarding glide vs. D3d in UT is typical ignorance on the reviewers part. Darn shame they don't bother equalizing the settings. It's like comparing Q3 normal vs. Q3 HQ.

Q3/MDK2 are more indicative of 2001 gaming performance than games like UT/Halflife/NFS, IMHO

Q3 and MDK2 are indicative of 2001 OGL performance, agreed. It has nothing to do with D3d performance.

quick note about MDK2 : Use the WickedGL drivers. 95ish fps. Not top dog, but quite good, nonetheless.

Halflife is based on the Q2 engine, BTW.

UT incorporates volumetric fog also. NFS is it's own engine, and is VERY VERY representative of how racing sims play on the 5500. In other words, top-notch. If you only play Q3 online, then there's no doubt...the 5500 isn't for you.

So, have I convinced you to "go Radeon"? ;-)

if I wasn't so happy with the 5500, I would've given the Radeon a chance awhile ago bro! It's a kickass card! My buddy has one, and he's quite pleased with it. He's a bit bummed about the UT 2nd CD texture thing tho.

also, just so you know, reactorcritical is quite a known nvidia fansite. their V5 results are just plain bad, but...I'm not going to bother getting into it.

Suffice to say that their poor performance is not comparable to my performance with the same card.

Ben:

sounds like you've got the boomin' system on it's way!!! Great! How much did you pay for the Pro2a, if you don't mind my asking?

I just got done setting up a Duron+Pro2a system, and I'm dumbfounded. I cannot believe that the Duron PLUS motherboard PLUS cooler ended up being $200

You gotta love that!!!! THIS BASTAGE FLIES!!!!!
