Voodoo5 6000

3dfx is retarded for even making this. they should have just scrapped the 6000 when they knew of the shortage of vsa-100 chips and just sold the 5500.

that way they could focus all their effort on their new rampage card.

3DFX's FSA kicks major butt! This card will do 4X at high resolution....no other reason needed! It's 'big' for a purpose!

  • BTW, Forums are screwy to the MAX!

Hey! It works...🙂 Lame excuse for a emoticon...

Holaycrap...I would have to knock a hole in my case and put an addition on my house to use that video card 🙂

I don't care how big it is..... I only care about how fast it is...

but hey, I think it is pretty cool to have such a biig card running in your system 🙂

Exactly. Why do people care about the size of the card. Sheesh, give me a break. Performance is the issue and if size means performance then great.

3dfx has make some mistakes, but the fact that they can scale chips will give them a huge advantage over Nvidia in the future (read, early next year when Rampage arrives)

yeah AND when they release the next chip after that (fear). if they keep researching better SLI techniques it will keep giving them better returns in performance when they double up chips.

Yeah, I don't really understand why everyone is making such a huge deal, about how big the card is.

Ok, let's just say that you might need to buy a new case to fit this card. Nobody seemed to have any problems buying new ones (or at least power supplies) when the Athlons first came out. Nobody seemed to have any problems buying new motherboards (which costs more than a case) for the Socket A chips.

Jeez, I think you guys are just running out of reasons to bash 3dfx.

The price aspect of this board is what will keep me from buying it. $600?!?!? I spent $220 on my GeForce2 GTS. I can't imagine the V5-6000 being worth almost 3 times the price of a GeForce2.

Remember all of the fake Voodoo5 pics that were floating around last year? The real boards look just like the fake pics 🙂

I certainly can appreciate not buying a $600 card. I surely won't be spending that kind of money on a video card.

But that's not what they are saying. They are bashing the size of the card.

Think about it, the Voodoo5 6000 will perform about the same as GeForce2 GTS Ultra, somtimes faster sometimes slower. 3dfx needs a 4chip solution to keep up with nvidias 1chip solution, 3dfx is technologicaly slow.

Actually, I have a video card laying around that is about this size. It was made 1980-82 and I believe it has 256k onboard RAM!

umm.. ok so I guess nVidia's technologically slow, becuase they don't have the ability to do SLI, or a form of SLI?

ok, and I guess nVidia's slow technologically, becuase they don't yet have Tile based rendering?

what about compression of the Z buffer?

what about figuring out a way of cleaning up the sky in Quake 3 (ala creating your own compression engine that takes the place of S3TC ala FXTC from 3dfx)?

don't dig that up, beucase you know it's not true.

I think that the size of the card is a valid issue, it won't fit in my case for sure, and I'm sure other people will have the same problem.

Soccerman-

First I want to say that with the exception of the physical size, I don't see a problem with using four chips by itself, but it isn't wise from a business standpoint and it wastes RAM space(textures need to be stored x4).

The more concerning problem-

1 V3 ~= 1 TNT2
2 VSA-100 ~= 1 GF2
4 VSA-100 ~= 1 GF2U

Where does it stop? I hope 3dfx can get back on the ball, but they alread are at the point where the boards are not capable of fitting into certain cases, an eight chip Rampage to compete with NV2X, Radeon2, and G800 would be a serious problem. I don't think that will happen, but that is the direction they have been heading in.

Lets just put it like this, VSA-200 will not have internal T&L so they will have to use 4 other T&L chips on the card, and because VSA-200 will not be any faster than VSA-100 only more fetures, that means 4 VSA-200 chips and 4 T&L units on the Rampage, 8 chips on a single card.

If they dont figure out how to get the same power in one chip then they will end up making a 16chip card with another 16chip daughterboard, and I guess no one would want that.

Czar, how do you know what the performance of the V-6000 will be? Please post a link next to the benchmarks you have seen.

There were some numbers on Sharkys and then according to many people who have seen the Voodoo5 6000 in action and compare them to the current cards. Also the GeForce 2 GTS Ultra is twice as fast as the Voodoo5 5500 and Voodoo5 6000 is going to be twice as fast as Voodoo5 5500 then we can see that it will perform about the same as the Ultra.

Another point is that nVidia would not give this card out at this price if it didnt belive that it would perform about the same.

Dantzig:your geforce 2 gts retailed for over $300 not $220. You paid the street price. The voodoo 5 6000 should retail for $600 but will be had for less, just like your card. And it will be faster then the GFultra without a dobt if it ever comes out.

It'll be faster than a GF2 ULtra without a doubt?

How can you back this up? Do you have a magic ball that can predict the future?

Mike

Even if the GTS2 Ultra and Voodoo 6000 cost the same... imagine the electric bill after using the Voodoo6000...you'll pay for that as well.
