I got all excited when I installed the new Voodoo5. After setting it up I ran 3DMark 2000 expecting to see a higher benchmark than the V3500 and Geforce 32Mb but i got a slower score about 3500 marks.I got 6200 marks with the Geforce and 4300 with the V3500. Does anyone know why. I feel a little let down after spending all that money!!!!!!!!!!!!

3DMark 2000 is heavily slanted towards T&L cards and a very poor barometer of how cards will perform in real world games currently available. Your scores are a little low none the less. I have Athlon clocked to 863, and I got 3800 with a V5 5500 and over 7000 with a CLAP2. Make sure you have the most recent VIA AGP driver install (4.03 I think). It will give you a decent performance boost.

MarkyBoy, you are not alone. I had a 5500 for a week that I got to replace my V3-3K. I was very dissapointed with the performance. For the money they cost I felt it should have shown a much bigger improvement than it did. I ended up returning the card and got a Herc 64meg Geforce2 instead. Much, much faster and very stable (that surprised me). Even Unreal Tournament gives me a higher framerate than the V5 did.

I've been a 3dfx proponent ever since they came out with the original Voodoo1. Had a V2 and V3 but after seeing the performance difference between the GF2 and the V5 I'm sold on the nvidia. I also didn't like the fact that the V5 needed an external power supply source. That much power dissapation has to go somewhere ( it's called heat :).

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, buy my vote is to go GF2.

Thanks for all your comments. I am now the owner of an Elsa Gladiac GF2 now I can play F1 2000 at max frames alot happier with a 3DMark2000 score of 7428. I have got to say though, that the extra detail which the V5 5500 brought out was excellent, but as I play racing games, who cares that I can see a blade of grass at 200mph along a straight.

I agree.
I purchased a Voodoo5 V5500 (should be considered Voodoo 4 as far as I'm concerned) and returned it to EB. I went back to ole reliable (my V770 Ultra). I experience lock-ups, weird effect in some games, and the performance was not that much of an increase.

The problem was probably vsync.

The 5500 installs with vsync enabled. You need to go into the 3dfx hub and turn it off. I tried running benches, got low scores, then realized I wasn't seeing any tearing. Found the vsync controls, and that fixed it.

I turn about 4200 3D marks (default 3D Mark setup) with a PIII-550E at 803Mhz, and about 4700 3D marks with a PIII-650 at 975Mhz.

Personally, I think the card's great. 4x FSAA is what they said it was cracked up to be. Then again, I'm not a big Q3A fan. More a UT GLide/ HL/ Thief person, and those games are great on this card.

Just my $0.02
