Voodoo3 vs. 7600GT

Why not just spend $120 to buy an 8800GS? That would certainly eliminate any performance issues once and for all.

Also remember that ATI has always sucked for OpenGL support, and GLide is an opengl subset. That's why City of Heroes (an opengl game title) always required a lot more ATI hardware than NV hardware. If the wrapper implements the calls using OpenGL you could have your source of poor performance right there.

Just try an NV card instead of that 850. Or yeah, $120 for an 8800GS would be good too.

uhh...

How can you say that a 7600 wont run the game smoothly? You must be kidding? I ran the game on a TNT2 with no hiccups.

If this ever did go past theory you would likely have to find the PCI flavor - I have a handful of voodoo3 AGP's which are the old skool version AGP that do not fit in any of the new MB's. Its a shame, they were great cards.

At the time, the 2D looked amazing compared to the cheap ass TNT cards that people were crappin out.

Fortunately thats more or less not an issue these days.

I don't want a 8800GS, I don't want any of the 98xx either, I am waiting for the next gen. It is very possible I am retarded, meaning yes if it comes down to it, I will wait for next gen with a voodoo3 running my system.

Yes, I know opengl is my culprit 🙁

No, I am not talking about 7600gt anymore.

It isn't a theory, I currently have a voodoo3 pci sitting in my computer. Interesting fact, I forgot they were fanless. My only issue with the Voodoo3 is Winxp drivers, and lack of 1680x1050, but that is expected. Godbless 1:1 pixel mapping on the monitor 😉.

Edit: I wonder how a dual core processor would react with win9x.

i've actually seen hacks for quake 4 and doom 3 that will run the games through GLIDE (no joke) on your voodoo3 smoothly. Be advised, ALL off the texture and lighting effects are disabled in this mode. But still, you can actually run the games. hah!

rofl yeah... I loved my voodoo 3 so much.. Nothing has come _close_ to the satisfaction I had when I dropped it into my Compaq K6-2 350, replacing the integrated ATi Rage Pro. Holy god, night and day.

I would be interested to see how good and compatible modern glide wrappers are. I remember playing with them awhile back, and not being satisfied. Speed isn't all that counts - accurate emulation is very important. All those pretty D2 spell effects need to be rendered correctly 😀

I've got an old box sitting at my parents' house with a 1.2 GHz T-bird Athlon, Win98se, and a Voodoo3 3000 PCI. It's fantastic. Golden age! Tribes FTW!

This thread made me miss my Voodoo 3 =( I never would of got rid of it had I not won a Geforce 2 Ultra at a Quake 3 tourny.

I am currently using a hacked driver package to get glide to work, however doesn't change the fact that the drivers are horrible.

As for Glide wrappers, the one I use for diablo2 is actually quite amazing, try it out.
