Voodoo3 versus Viper2

If these 2 cards are the same price, which is the better all around card? The Viper does have tv out, the Voodoo3 is the 2000 agp.

In DirectX and OpenGL, using the latest drivers the ViperII is definitely faster.

The V3 does have an advatage as it can use Glide games.

In terms of driver support, the V3 looks a little better for the future.

My v3 has served me for over 1.5 years now. I still have the 2000 pci I used im my k6-2 333 before i got this p3.

I'm currently using the Viper II, it's not a bad card. I'm not heavily into gaming, but UT and Nocturne look pretty good. I paid $100 for it last year, now I think you can find it for half that. The downside: 2-D is just average, and it looks like Diamond/S3 has abandoned this card as far as driver updates go. DVD quality is great, and video out is always nice.

The viper 2 has incredibly slow 2d speed. If you look at the reviews of it, it's not even close to competitive with anything out there.

I am not familiar with the Viper2, but if it supports 3d in 32bit color, it is a better choice.
Reason being, some newer games that use 3d will only work if your card supports 3d in 32 bit. I found this out the hard way with the V3. Links 2001, a Microsoft golf game, has finally added 3d to this great series. Problem is like I said. Since the V3 only supports 16bit 3d, then it only works in software mode with this 3d game. But, if older games is all that this will be used for, then the V3 is a great choice if it's under $35 (used). Anything more than $35, and you might as well spend $80 and get a "new" GeForce2 MX card.

In terms of driver support, the V3 has NO future.

If the only game you ever play is Unreal Tournament, the Viper II is an excellent choice. FOR EVERYTHING ELSE (pretty much 🙂 ) the Voodoo3 is more reliable, stable, and sometimes even prettier and faster.
Some people may knock the Voodoo3 for its lack of 32-bit colour, but most people have already forgotten that its 16-bit colour (22-bit really) was the best looking 16-bit colour out there- bar none. With V3 16-bit colour, moving to 32-bit wasn't that big of a deal! I sure never saw it when I moved from V3-16bit to Geforce DDR-32bit. There are times I really regret "upgrading" that V3-3500TV. Since I've sold it off and replaced it with a simple TNT1 VIVO, (with surprisingly good 2D!!) I don't have a good gaming platform anymore.
Really, that was my plan, although I do have a little gaming power for the odd time I decide to treat myself. 😛

If I ever got a chance to grab a V3-3500TV again, I would. 3dfx made an excellent product- period. Ironically enough, it's *still* getting better support than the Viper2 does. 😛

i'd normally say the voodoo3, because of drivers and support. but then 3dfx went out of business. The newest savage2000 drivers are supposed to be pretty good. Savage also has the hardware dvd, and the tv out. Its good for q3 and UT and some other games, and i've heard they fixed the problems with all the other games. The savage is also a lot faster, faster than a geforce256 sdr for the most part. So, i'd say savage, depends what games you are playing though, and if you are going win2k, i'd go v3.

I have a Voodoo 3 2000 pci and I must say: I love it ! The only problem is to take it out of my computer every night (to sleep with you know 😀 )

My V3 3500TV (the fastest clocked version) runs games great.. Much faster than my ATI AIW 128pro did with 32M.
