Ya staples.com DOES NOT and WILL NO LONGER CARRY THE VOOODOO 5's

They gave me a back order number for the Voodoo 5 but havent heard from them so I decided to give them a call. I spoke to a gentlemen, apparently he knew about 3dfx going under. He told me that they will no longer manufacture these cards and it is very unlikely that they will have them in stock. Weird thing is that they dont care to take it off their website.

get the special order number for the agp card from staples, and find a site that does not "say" oem on the website. staples pricematched it for me...but then i bought it in november...by the way, those who got in on the 3dfx $50 rebate, it finally came in for me so they do eventually honor their rebates. I hope everybody can get their stuff

Great price for a particurly bad card. Don't buy if your processor is less than 800 Mhz., no T&L engine. Good for your parent's or little brother's 'puter.

<< Great price for a particurly bad card. >>

A woefully underinformed statement if I ever saw one.

The Voodoo :

1.) Has the best 2D image quality
2.) Has excellent, stable drivers that support up through DX8
3.) Has the best 16-bit 3D image quality (love their "22 bit" ;))
4.) Has by far the best implementation of FSAA

Sure, it's not the frame-rate king, but it is the overall image quality king (Radeon is better in 32bit 3D).

T&L is of no major consequence (ie. only a few titles) at this time. When it is, it will be time for new vid cards for most people anyways.

the gefore3 might debunk the V5. It has some implimentation of FSAA that might be equal to or better than 3dfx's FSAA in visual quality but also faster than 3dfx's version of FSAA. Had 3dfx never developed FSAAA, the geforce3 might have never had it. THis should be interesting. Even though the Geforce3 will cost $600 when it comes out, I won't be needing it now, the v5 should hold me tight until December at the least, maybe even summer 2002.

GhostSoldier, no T&L engine? Why do you need 800 mhz or more cpu for T&L? Do you or others know if the Radeon LE needs 800 mhz cpu. My cpu is 400 k6 3d.

No, what he means is that if you do not have support in your video hardware for T&L, then you will have to rely on software support, hence the need for lots of CPU power.

<No, Staples won't pricematch (unless you get a totally clueless csr) a oem w/ retail product.>

hehe
i remember i got my Monster 3D card cheap because of a clueless csr at future shop. It was $122 when they were usually $200
this was back in the day

If you play games written in glide then the voodoo5 is by far the best card you can get.
I only play Unrealtournament so its the best card for frames in that.
I bought one of those radeons that were cheap. There is a reason why they are cheap, they had the worst 2d I've ever seen on a card. Made my eyes hurt after just a short time looking at it. The 3d didn't seem that good either on the radeon. The voodoo5 has good 2d also.
And then there is win2k, the radeon sure doesn't work very well in that. I think the geforce is better but the voodoo5 is great in win2k.

consider yourself lucky becuase on the box it says for 'Windows 95, WIndows 98' and it's not common to have problems with the V5 in WIn2k; just check out www.x3dfx.com The card still kicks ass though.

I've never had problems with 3dfx cards in win2k
when I was beta testing it I got 45 fps with voodoo2s..that was when no card worked with win2k for 3d.

GLIDE? Don't throw that advantage in anyones face any more, no new games are being written to support it any more! Just be prepared for no new drivers and you won't be dissapointed down the road.

For people that play games that support glide and are planning on playing them for a while in the future it is a good deal. Also for 2d it is excellent. If you like playing every game in the world for just a week then you should buy something else.
