Voodoo 3 handles Max Payne admirably well.

I've just been trying out a bit of Max Payne on my system and it seems to run surprisingly well considering my video card.
I'm running a P3 866 @ 1155, and a V3 @ 218MHz.

In the deafult medium detail settings w/16bit color the games runs totally smoothly with no slowdown whatsoever.

In the default highest detail settings in 16bit color the game runs smoothly for the most part but in a few rare instances it can get somewhat choppy, but not enough to impact the playability of it.

All trials were done in 1024x768 in each case, 16bit color depth as the Voodoo 3 doesnt support 32bit color depth in 3D.

This is using a full install without the patch installed. I havent experienced any of the stability issues or crashes that it seems many others are reporting on. Running the game in Windows 2000 SP2.

Any comments from others that have tested the game?

<< Have you tried wickedGL? >>

Nope, havent even touched it. I'm using the Omega 1.02 drivers. They've always worked well for me.

I found a simple way to get Max Payne to show the frame rates. Running through the Tutourial in 1024x768x16bpp medium detail settings I averaged around 70FPS, peaking only at about 80FPS, I dropped to about 45FPS at one point for a split second.

I'll run some more thorough tests tomorrow with the frame rate counter enabled to see what I get.

<< Of course I imagine it helps that you've clocked it at 218mhz. :) >>

No doubt it helps considerably as that's well above the clock of even the V3 3500. I'll have to run a few more tests later on with processor & video card at default to see how she runs.

<< I'm running it on a 500mhz Athlon with a Voodoo 3 3000. It plays well! >>

What resolution/detail level?

Screen Mode: 1024x768x16
Acceleration: D3D Software T&L (haven't played any new games until this so I don't know what this means, just though I would put it in)

My Voodoo3 3000 AGP isn't overclocked yet.

The game runs very smooth & nicely. I haven't tried upping any graphics or anything yet. I think I set it to Medium in the Options.

Yep, by default it'd be at medium.
If you can play it on a V3 3000 and an Athlon 500MHz at medium detail and 1024x768x16bpp then one definitely doesnt need an Radeon or GF2 GTS to get playable frame rates, that's clear.

i had a v3 it was an awesome card.. much better than the mx that replaced it.
that is impressive news considering how old that card is.. now all we need is someone who still uses a tnt2ultra framerates up next to those. :D
