Voodoo 3 3000 not playing nice with XP?

Just built a system for a friend from spare parts lying around, including an old V3-3000. Now whenever I try to install and run games, it seems that when it goes to switch screen resolutions into the game it kicks back out to the desktop. Does anyone here know for certain if the V3's are incompatible with Win XP?

3dfx died before they ever released any WinXP supporting drivers. MS will only officially support the Voodoo 3 in 2D only.
The native WinXP drivers for the V3 have no OpenGL support and a fairly basic though vaguely functional Direct3D support.

Luckily there are quite a few third party 3dfx V3/4/5 drivers for WinXP available on the net. Naturally their based on the now ancient 3dfx code base, so you can expect to have a few issues in some of the newer games but considering 3dfx is now dead their surprisingly decent for the most part.
Even extinct 3dfx still has quite a loyal fan base that has worked hard to prolong the life of 3dfx products.

Voodoo Files archive of third party drivers...
3dfxhq is still hard at work creating new drivers for the Voodoo series...

Agreed, the 3DFx fan base is still there - I just installed a Voodoo5 5500 in a friend's system with XP and the 3rd party drivers work great - he's playing Counterstrike and Dungeon Siege without any problems at all! And much better visually compared to the 8meg ATI RageIIC card he had before. ;)

I had the same problem with my old system running XP and the V3 3000. Voodoofiles.com has some 3rd party drivers for windows XP that might work. I fixed the problem by buying a GF 3 Ti 200 for the spare computer. www.voodoofiles.com

I also tried to build an XP computer from spare parts, including a V3 2000. I quickly gave up after way too many BSODs. I bought a cheap ATI 7000 card.

That rocks. Thanks guys. I thought I was going to have to install Win98. That would have been a big PITA.
