Funny... I signed up for Vonage about a month ago and within hours saw a thread in ATOT about Vonage going down. Called within an hour of signing up and canceled the service lol.

Now I'm with a Canadian VOIP provider called Primus (a regular POTS/ ISP, not a one trick pony like Vonage) for $15 a month. So it was cheaper and its unlimited... ATOT is good for something after all. ;)

SkypeOut FTW

I think it's been mentioned before but if Vonage goes down because of this then all VoIP providers are at risk. The main issue being connecting calls to standard phone lines. So no 'FTW' on this one. Maybe we can all start using Teamspeak though, it's free. :p

According to Paul Derry, from patent experts Venner Shipley, most of Verizon's claims should only apply to companies with servers located in the US, even if services are being offered to US citizens, so Skype and friends should be in the clear.

This is good news, thanks. I guess Packet8 gets snagged possibly?

Kinda a shame this went for so long, reasonable phone prices that is, only to shoot back up to Ma Bell levels. I guess we'll see how this goes, doesn't look good now. :(

I don't know. It would really suck if VOIP went down the tubes in the US.

i've been contemplating skypeout as my main line to replace my vonage, but lack of any 911 worries me.

FYI, another disadvantage of SkypeOut+SkypeIn is that when you dial a number with Skype, the number that shows up on the receiver's caller ID is NOT your SkypeIn number. They say they are working on that feature, but I wouldn't count on it happening.

I see no reason to switch from Vonage if you're happy with the service. Their patent woes aren't affecting their customers (at least not yet).

I only switched to SkypeIn+SkypeOut because I never use my home phone.

If you have cingular you can get the unlimited calling plan for $20. I personally don't have cingular but I got a cingular work phone that I put in to qualify.

isn't cingular the new at&t

Dunno why, but there is just something about VOIP that I just don't feel comfortable with. Admittedly, I have never tried it... but something about it just doesn't feel right.

The main problem is that it does not work if your power goes out. Although I suppose a vonage box + cable modem + router could run for a while off a UPS.

Yeah, a good UPS would probably last a really long time if those were the only things running on it. Thats an interesting solution.
