I'm a happy Vonage customer and I am unconcerned about reliability since they offer forwarding that will send the calls to my cell phone in the event of a network problem. They also offer forwarding that will ring my home and cell numbers at the same time.

Also a happy Vonage customer. Vonage plus cell is great. Also, you can sign up your vonage phone for 911, if that is a concern. And, when we order pizza, they seem to know who we are - not a problem that it isn't the "phone company".

And another happy Vonage customer. Never had an issue. When the cable goes out my Cell rings, simple as that. Although that next to never happens.

Is it just me, or has the vonage web site been down for a few days on end now?

Man, my BS Fastaccess connection's gone nuts. Can't connect to bellsouth.com either. lol

Resets, restarts, shut down firewalls, checked host file, nada. Time for another 20 minute wait contacting BS tech support. Argh.........

EDIT UPDATE: Turns out it was the NForceWare Firewall. Had to uninstall it, everything works fine now. That thing is the debil!

Referal looks like the way to go, big bonus for the person refering. I am surprized there isn't a thread like share the love at amazon.

Anybody see deals on skipping the activation fee ($30)?

Wiring the house is pretty easy, even if you don't have access to the entry point. Each phone uses one pair of wires, and most houses have between 4 and 8 pairs. Just pick an unused pair and connect the voip box to that pair, and the hard part connect all your outlets to that pair. Each outlet has 2 pairs, line1 and line2, so you could have a normal land line on line1 and the vonage on line2.

My plan is 1 basic cheapo land line, 1 vonage line for all long distance etc, and a cheap cell plan (old airtouch -> verizon super saver 100, $25 for 100 prime, 500 weekend and night (best part is that is 7pm to 7am)).

i rejected Vonage because I live in NJ and would have to pay sales tax and Packet8 is $19.99 with unlimited to the US and Canada. They took 18 days to port my local number over (LNP) -- not bad. The quality is very good.

Wiring the house is simple if you disconnect from Verizon --- just unhook the wires at the block outside and then plug your voip box into a phone outlet. That activates all the others. In my house tho that is not so good since we have chronic interference over the lines, a Spanish radio station in the background.

Love the Packet8 call forward feature. It rings my cell phone almost immediately and the first phone you answer -- home or cell -- wins.

Have both Vonage and P8 hooked up right now, P8 is going bye-bye though, after the 3mos. free offer from J&R I got tired of P8's shakey service and horrible customer reps.

To put it simply, when I call people via my P8 line they can tell I'm not calling from a land line, when I call via Vonage no one can tell.

One thing that is really annoying with Vonage is they nickel and dime you when you change service plans, in the end it is just cheaper to cancel completely and start from scratch :(

I am another happy user after 2 months of service. Being able to get my messages online is an exceptional service that I use at work, airports etc. Features such as 911 service and call forwarding with no extra fees makes this a no brainer. Get this.

Just want to say that every person that is on this thread will like your referral. Remember us......

Can anyone comment on the 911 service? Is it only available to those area codes highlighted in yellow?

1. I think Vonage is good if you do not have home lan system.
2. They had lousy customer service-could never get the phone ( I got it to work but the computer behind their router could not get access to the interent)and last computer to work together- putting it behind my existing router.
3. I tried for weeks trying to get the above combination to work-tried calling during those weeks waiting longer than 20 minutes at a time and never could get them on the phone.
4. I first emailed and they told me I that I would have to talk to D-link if I put it behind my existing router--even thought the sales rep assurred me that putting the phone router behind my existing router-simple
5. So I paid $68+ for a look see-or so I thought
6. Then you have to call a CSR to cancel the service (Oh- and that phone call took 3 tries with waits of over 30 minutes has to give you a RA# via email to return the phone router
7. I received the RA# email- along with another email stating that since I had not returned the router in the alotted time (what-I got this email 10 minutes after I cancalled) that the disconnect fee could not be wavied and was charged another $43+ and another $39.99 for not getting the rounter returned in time
8. So my look see cost me over $150+ and tried to contact CS by phone and never got through with
9. I still sent router (with tracking) back to them:Also in that return box is a copy of a letter I sent to the Attorney General of their state.
10. I have not heard from Vonage but I have heard from the Attorney General's consumer division and have advise me to dispute all charges with my cc card compay until they can clear-up this mess; by the way they were amazed at the email (which was time stamped) that I have not returned their router within 10 minutes and all the ensuing feeswith disconecting
11. By the way, once you sign up with your credit card they charge your card and they notifiy you what they charged to your account.
.............That was my expierence with Vonage and will not be issusinf referals to anyone that I like:)

I'm surprised at the problems you had. I've had Vonage since March '03. I've used linksys, d-link and webramp routers without issue. Oh except the webramp, it has a damn good built-in firewall that was blocking UDP ports. with Vonages help I opened up enough ports to get it work. I have not had a problem since. And the service offering just gets better every 6 months.

There is an activation fee? I didn't pay one when I started. Regardless, you get one month free and for every referral you make you get another two months. Get six friends to signup and it's free for a year. totally worth it.

I use Packet 8, been happy with the service so far...........rates are cheaper.

Anyhow, here is what I did to wire my house.

1. Make sure the phone line outside is unhooked from your main service box. They carry voltage and voltage will fry your VoIP box.

2. Plug the phone line from the back of the VoIP box in to a wall jack. If you want a phone at the jack you plug the VoIP box in to, use a splitter in the back of the VoIP box, like I did.

You could also run a phone line under your house from the back of the VoIP box to your main service box outside if there isn't a phone jack in the room your VoIP box is in. Just drill a tiny hole in the floor, run wire under house, out vent, tack to outside wall. Paint to match house color if you wish. :)
