Vomiting Disorder on Rise in Weed-Friendly Colorado

This is interesting and something I'd never even heard of before. Apparently some people who use pot frequently develop a disorder where they have to puke all of the time. Weird, huh?

Long-term heavy marijuana use can cause chronic vomiting and abdominal pain in some people, new research suggests.

And the syndrome could become more frequent and pervasive as more states legalize use of the drug, according to health experts.

Cases of the disorder, which is called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), doubled in Colorado as access to legal marijuana became widespread, said Dr. Kennon Heard. He is chief of medical toxicology for the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

"All of the emergency departments in the state now are seeing this on a daily to weekly basis," Heard said. "There are a lot of patients ending up in the emergency room with this, and presumably there are even more who don't come to the emergency room, who just ride it out at home."

Patients who develop the syndrome typically smoke marijuana on a daily basis, and have been using it for six months or more, Heard said.

Based on some past experiences in my life, I'm going to call BS on this.

Edit: Who knew at the time I was doing science.

Weed is used to counter nausea.

Hung out with a hell of a lot of potheads for some years and smoked almost every day. Nobody ever puked.

Even after i've eaten a whole loaf of marijuana banana bread or a whole dish of pot brownies i've never wanted to throw up...wanted the ride to stop a couple times but that's about it.

I can't believe how many times this story is being told on the web. Based on a diagnosis of 81 cases vs. 41 the previous year. 🙄 So many factors could skew their results it's unbelievable it is being reported as canon. And assuming it's true I can't even imagine the threshold of usage necessary to bring on this malady. This sounds like grasping for straws.

Yeah, I don't really get why everyone hates on marijuana so much. People really seem to want legalized marijuana to fail.

And from what I've seen elsewhere this is about Chronic Vomiting Syndrome, which isn't necessarily caused by CHS. I think I had norovirus a few years ago; went to the doctor and all he prescribed was anti-nausea medication. So he might have marked that down as CVS too. I may live in Colorado, but I've never touched weed.

That's a good point. You have millions of people toking up and just a relative handful of these cases.

So I don't think this is an anti-pot story. It's really more of a medical oddity story. I don't think anyone is saying that pot shouldn't be legal because of this. There certainly more serious heath consequences you can suffer from pot but comparatively alcohol is far worse.

Not only that, it's clear from the article that if you happen to be one of the unfortunate and tiny minority this happens to, all you have to do is quit and in a few days you'll be fine. It's no different than having motion sickness. If you puke when you get on a boat, don't ride boats.

Yeah, pretty much. But it's still interesting especially as one person pointed out, since pot is often used to treat nausea and loss of appetite.

Time to make marijuana illegal! Think of the children!

Also...this sounds like bs simply because you could say the same thing about eating every day. How exactly are they correlating pot smoking to the vomiting. Pretty sure it's just a coincidence. I've known people who smoke habitually for years and the most they get is..well stupider.

I imagine part of the issue is people that overdo it. Could also be a certain strain, or something. Smoking anything is not exactly good for you. Vaping is not good for you either, it's just less bad than smoking. People get the idea that these things have zero effect and overdo it.

The interesting thing about weed though is that it's very hard to actually OD on. But people get the idea that it can't do harm at all, it still can, and it also affects people differently. It can have positive effects in some people and negative effects for others.

Though I'm almost thinking there is more to this particular issue. Maybe it's a popular strain going around where it's laced with something.
