Volume knob quit working

I have Altec Lansing speakers with the continuous volume knob, and the volume knob quit working. It just turns and turns, but no change in volume. I can cut the power to the sub and plug it back in, and sometimes that helps. But tonight, nothing's working. Do I just need new speakers? I've had these since Jan '99, but still love them.
 
When you say continous you mean the volume knob doesn't actually control the volume but just sends a signal to the circuits inside which do it digitally? In that case, sounds like the logic circuits inside are fscked up. It can probably be fixed but it's gonna be a pain.
