volume icon missing from system tray

Recently the volume/speaker icon in the system tray has disappeared. I tried looking under the Sounds and Audio Devices category in the control panel and "place volume icon in the taskbar" is enabled. Does anyone know how to bring it back?

my sound still works but its inconvenient to have to go to the control panel every time i want to change the volume settings.

I'd try unchecking that box, applying it, then go back in and check it back. Sometimes it might get confused and just needs a little toggle to get it back to form.
