ok..here is the thing....in bios motherboard monitor
it shows following voltage readings
3.3v =3v
5v =4.6v
12v =11.8v

please tell me if these voltages can be the cause for various other parts to fail...in the past few months i have replaced all my ide drives...ram and graphics card......system runs smoothly fr few weeks then again something or other crashes

system config
Athlon XP 2000
a7n266
transcend 512 DDR 400
Seagate 80gb@7200
Asus CDRW

If its a generic PS that came with your case I would replace it regardless of the voltage readings...none of those readings insure that the rails are stable under operational loads. I would replace the PS with a reputable brand..antec, thermaltake, enermax, OCZ etc. with at least a 400 watt rating.

The software monitor doesn't accurately get voltage readings compared to a digital multimeter so maybe your psu is still ok. According to your readings, the 3.3 and 5v rails are off by more than 5%.

I agree that generic psu's and ones like Xazer/Aspire/X-connect are rubbish. A good 300W from Fortron,Seasonic ,Enermax is sufficient if you don't plan on upgrading.

I would say so. Those voltages are a tad low. When my p/s recently died it was dropping voltages like that.
