Volt plug-in hybrid officially revealed

Very impressive, now if they can just keep the costs reasonable, I think it's a huge step forward. This has a ~40mi all-electric range, imagine if they can double/triple that, and most Volt drivers can pretty much say goodbye to the gas pump!

They say mileage about 1/6th the cost of gas. That would be nice.

EDIT: I really like the idea of paying $.80 to travel 40 miles. That would be at anemic speeds of course, but if this thing is as good as they say, it basically pulls us down to one dollar gasoline, doesn't it?

I own my cars (almost 🙂). Selling them to buy a new hybrid is economically stupid but in the case of this it would almost make it worth it because gas costs each month would plummet.

for some reason the first thing that popped into my head was dodge stratus. second was honda civic.

in houston that'd be around 3 cents per mile for fuel cost, which is still way better than dino juice

looks really nice. but I highly doubt the interior would look like that in the production model. How much is this supposed to cost?

estimates are $40k before tax incentives.

Looks good. I love the 40 mile all-electric range. I have a 20 mi. round trip to work every day. The projected $40k cost is way too steep, though. I appreciate the tech, but they need to go way more upscale luxury/sport for $40k.

looks 100x better than the prius.
does it come in manual?
for those who don't have a garage and do outdoor parking, i guess this is not an option eh?

extension cord?

pop the hood!!

It does not look bad actually...hopefully the price will not be astronomically, otherwise that prius will still be 'winning' @ 25k for a brand new one.

I have to say its a great looking for what basically is a compact car.
For a hatch that looks like a sedan, its even better.
I'd imagine it'll even look better with a better color scheme.
I'm really rooting for GM.

The original shots with the executives standing in front did not do the car justice. The LCD gauge cluster is cool as hell.

It looks like they're throwing in all sorts of electronic gadgets standard to make the expected $40k price more attractive.

Although it is far removed from the concept, i gotta say it looks awesome. I hope people ignore the badge when considering it.

The "up to" in up to 40 miles all electric range does not have me excited. Still better then any other offerings on the market in that respect though.

40 on initial battery charge alone. Car keeps on chugging after that due to the small 4-cylinder gas motor.

It is a good step forward, but hopefully the economy of scale will kick in rather soon. I'd like to have one someday, but that is a pipe dream until a used market develops for these. (people who can't afford much gas don't have money to spend on new cars...)

40 on initial battery charge alone. Car keeps on chugging after that because the battery is recharged by the gasoline motor.

But you have to realize they say
The five-door four-seater will be capable of up to 100mph (160km/h) top speed and can cover 40hmi (64km) of the EPA?s city cycle on electric power alone
That's EPA rating and we all know that EPA rating isn't worth shit.

That 40 miles is going to depend on the type of commute you have. How much of it is city driving, how much is highway, type of terrain (hills?). All these things are going to effect how many miles you'll get out of the batteries.
My guess is that they will last anywhere between 30-50 miles. Which will be good or bad to some.

It's not an exciting-looking car, but it's better overall than the upcoming Insight. At more than double the expected price of the Insight, though, I'm not sure this would be a smart buy. People complain about the economics of hybrids, so this would be an even tougher sell.

The EPA cycles are still estimates, but I don't have any trouble beating their revised ratings in my car. If you drive smart, the EPA numbers are actually low now.

Agreed, though I think it's a very important move and I hope it doesn't get shelved. I'd like to see dramatic improvements as they produce these suckers

Imagine :

1st gen = $40k price, loads of gizmos, 40mi all-electric range
2nd gen = $32k price, simpler gizmos, 100mi all-electric range
3rd gen = $27k price, 160mi all-electric range

etc

Yes, there are people who can beat the EPA numbers but I see lots of people everyday complaining because their vehicle gets a mpg below the EPA rating. Your correct, it's all in how you drive and that's why it's not going to get the solid 40 that everyone seems to think it will. Could be more, could be less
