Volt moded 7900 GT finaly ate it... Upgrade help?

Well, my crazy volt moded and O/Ced EVGA 7900 GT lasted me almost 3 years and now it's showing signs of no return (Green distortion, even at POST). 🙁 I'm looking at the 285 GTX but I'm wondering if my PSU can hack it and even if it could would it be worth it considering my sad CPU status. My somewhat crappy rig is in the sig, whats the best move here? I'm looking for the most performance I can get for the least amount of money and I'm willing to accept a full computer upgrade if necessary.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

I am guessing don't want to overclock your cpu? An overclocked E6600 will still get you good results in games. A 55nm 9800GTX+ would probably be the best match for your stock processor and power supply. If you get a GTX 285 and overclock your dual core cpu, it will most probably work alright, but you will be runner much closer to the limit of your PSU.

Wait a minute, I didn't see your monitor in sig. I think you would be okay getting a GTX 285/280/260 or Radeon 4870 1GB. At 1920x1200 a 2.4 Ghz C2D would be enough to produce comfortable gameplay, now if you had an A64 that would have been different. Also if you get the stock clocked 285 idle and load power usage would be slightly better than the 280. I say you will be fine with a 500W fortron, just don't overclock the 285 😛

Another suggestion, why don't you grab a cheap used P35/P45 motherboard, or if your dell case only takes a microATX then grab one of these:

Asus P5E-VM HDMI

It is the best known mATX overclocker. I did a similar thing to a A64 HP computer sometime ago, swapped the motherboard with a Biostar Tforce 6100 and overclocked the 3500+ to 2.75Ghz, later replaced with a Opty 170 @ 2.6Ghz. All in a diminutive looking HP chassis

If budget is a concern newbiz.com has a Biostar G31-M7 motherboard for $37. It has all the overclocking options you need and is good for at least a 400MHz fsb, which will work for any cpu with a higher multiplier.

You could then get an MSI HD 4830 from newegg for $79 with a $10 mail-in rebate. Very low power consumption even after overclocking.

After shipping your looking at under $130, and it will game much faster than your 7900GT.

You should be able to max out your Q6600, thus having enough cpu power to support a faster gpu later on.

Thanks for all the input.

For now, I'm thinking I'll go for the 285 GTX and see how my power supply and E6600 handle things, then go from there if I need to.

To tell you the truth I'm not the hardcore gamer I once was. I play TF2, L4D, SC and some WoW. For me Playability is much more important than Image quality but I'm willing to spend the money if it's the most efficient choice. I remember "back in the day" they had Dollars per FPS charts, do review sites still do that?
