volleyball question: cap vs. no-cap scoring

ive been playing volleyball for awhile and its been my understanding that in a capped (say 17) sideout scoring game, one team wins when it has scored two consecutive points (ie. duece, advantage, match point). when there is no cap, the team can win by scoring two points above their opponent (eg. 17-19). is this correct?

i ask b/c i played a game tonight that was capped to 17; but we lost 17-16...tried talking to the ref after the game, and he said that a capped 17 pt game means that first team to 17 wins.

btw how does this cap/no-cap relate to rally scoring? since a sideout equals a point, can there even be such thing as a capped game (according to my understanding/definition, so essentially its just win by 2 pts)

nm...i think i found my answer (ref being correct, 17-16 is a win, though his calls were such bs for the most of the game...)...still very upset

with no cap, you win by two points, and there's no limit to how high the points go up to. when there's a cap, the first person to the cap wins, unless you win by two points first.

the scoring system for volleyball has changed in the last few years, not really sure if i like it, its suppose to speed up game play and make it more exciting or something, but it doesn't really. maybe i'm jsut old school.

i play vball and have never had a capped scoring game. wow, thats really weird. in our 5th round matchup, we've gotten up to 27-25 score, when 1st to 15 (win by 2) is the primary objective of the 5th round.

in my day playing on the beach, we used to have something called sideouts. you could play for 2 hours before a team scored 15. And we played on full sized courts... and we liked it!

haha, that was back in the day when scoring would be based off sideouts. now, its all rally scoring, whcih i dont like. you can be up by 7, and the next thing you know, the other team is up by 7.

you also have to love having your serve being able to touch the net and is still playable if it lands in on the your opponents side (let serve)...

been playing for 10 years (mostly three's and four's, definitely not the backyard picnic kind where you slam dunk the ball) and it took awhile to get used to the new rules...

Its really not that weird at all.. I've played vball for like 8 years now.. college, nationals, club, and have seen cap scoring quite a bit. I've even played in Afghanistan.. how many people can say that? :D

hmm...just checking up on this thread of mine
to respond to those asking where i play, for now i'm playing in the Big City league. the league isnt really that great (its got some really stupid rules like you cant take serves overhand or set attacks, and the level of refs vary a lot). i started during the summer and the stayed on b/c the team i'm playing with is a fun group, but theyre not really great vball players. the league seems more like a social thing, since from what i see the level of vball is pretty low (lots of free balls, no defense, no blocking etc, no standard offenses like 5-1 or 6-2); my high school vball team was so much better.
i'd consider urban league, but i'm still a student. and i dont think chelsea piers offers leagues, and its ridiculously expensive ($50 a day for nonmembers). pickup games in central park are ok during the summers.
if anyone knows of any other vball opportunities PM me.

some vball humor...

TOP TEN - Reasons you fear the new volleyball team you joined is totally Recreational;

10. Each of your new team-mates walk on the court wearing things like; a) a plain white t-shirt or hockey sweater. b) thin kneepads, polyester shorts, and baseball cap turned backwards. b) knee-pads over their sweat pants. c) equipment from other sports such as elbow pads, batting gloves, and safety goggles. d) black dress socks inside their sneakers!

9. You ask your Captain if they run a 5-1 or a 6-2 and she looks puzzled and replies, "I'm five-six?!?"

8. You ask who does the setting and they tell you they all take turns.

7. They use the word "spike" to excess (as in; "I'm a good spiker," or "Nice spike," or "Spike it.").

6. You ask them if they?ve played in a competitive league before and they reply, ?Yes, most of us played on the same intramural team in high school.?

5. You ask what position they each play and they scratch their heads and say, "We always rotate."

4. You ask if its time to warm up so they all stand in a small circle and volley one ball around.

3. You hand dig a line shot that could have torn your face off and your team-mates all clap and yell, "Nice bump!"

2. After your first serve your captain says, "Wooo, Kewl, looks like at least one of us is brave enough to serve overhand this season."

1. They can't understand why the referee DOESN?T stop play when someone breaks a nail, but they do look confused when the referee DOES stop the play because THEY touched the net.
