Forgive me. I've been living under a rock. Could someone come up with some "cliffs" about why I should get VOIP instead of a regular phone service?
 
Cheaper and more features.

Works best if you have cable/fiber broadband.

Check out Vonage, SunRocket, ViaTalk, etc.
 
Also ... make sure you have your cable / DSL modem and other networking equipment (and the VOIP appliance) all on a UPS so if the power drops, you'll continue to have phone service (and/or keep your cell phone handy)

Pay attention to the "911" setup for your service, or you may not get emergency services to the right place.
