What happens when the power goes out and you have only VOIP and you need to call 911? and your dsl modem is off b/c of no power???

What do you do?
 
Go to a neighbors house.
or
Bend over and kiss own ass goodbye.

It is for this exact reason(well, more for communication in general) that I'd never switch completely over to VOIP.

Although chances are if you have a dsl connection, you'll have a dial-tone as the two generally go hand-in-hand. 😉

You get murdered/robbed/die of heart attack/the worst case scenario of any other emergency you might have.

Anyone that has VoIP should be smart enough to have a cell phone as a backup. Or have your Modem and such on a UPS. That way unless the central office loses power, you'd still be fine.

have a backup power supply for the modem
 
I hope no one here pronounces it "Voeep."

It's "Voice Over I P" damn it. It's a serious petpeeve I have, since I knew someone who kept on pronouncing it Voeep, and had no idea what it meant. he was such an idiot.

Just have your cable modem / router / VOIP adapter and phone (if it is powered) on a UPS.
The power went out last night for me (which is the first time since I installed the UPS) and it worked great.

Yeah, I want to give that a shot with my SunRocket service. I've been contemplating one for a while, and that might be enough of an added perk to put me over the edge for one. 🙂

Spend $30 on a UPS to power cable modem/VOIP box. Or use a cellphone, of which there are 120mil+ in the US. Or any other number of things which don't require you paying twice as much or more than VOIP for a landline.
