VOIP?

OK guys i am thinking on making the leap to VOIP. I got rid of my cell about 2 months ago because i only used in once in awhile and was paying over $50 a month after taxex and all. Its hard to find a plan for under $40 now. I do miss the free long distance though. I am going to get a voip to replace it to save cost. I am now trying to find which provider to go with. I have only heard good things about sunrocket unfortunatly, they don't have local numbers in my area code. Ok the two i am really looking at now is packet8 & vonage. Packet8 is cheaper which is good but vonage has some cool features that are nice to. Like QOS. I have a DSL connection at 150KB/s down stream and 16KB/s upstream. With this bandwith QOS will probably become important. All of this cause there is a very special girl that has just came into my life...gotta have long distance 🙂. Anyways i digress. Vonage seems to some cool features like the ability to turn yoru voicemail into wav files and send them to your email. I just can't believe they don't compress the wav files.

Anyways is there any more provicers i should look at? Maybe ViaTAlk? OH and the router that comes with the router that you get for vonage only has 3 ports. Not enough for me. I hope it has an uplink port so i can add another switch. So anyways, which do you guys think i should go with?

Oh one more think i hope they would open the standards up so you could use your own voip software or your own ip phone.

thanks

1. look at vonage😀 I jsut got them

2. they give you a 'phone adapter' which is basically a linksys router with VoIP and QoS integrated😀

Anyone Else? Unless someone comes up with a compelling reason not to go with vonage thats probably what ill go with. I think im going to try out the 14.99 500 min service for now and maybe up it if i need more minutes.

I've had Vonage for 3 years now. The service is decent most of the time; tech support however, is not. I think that's the same for most residential VoIP service nowadays.
I'd recommend you get the unlimited service cause you and your girl will talk most of the time, and when you need to upgrade the plan they'll charge you service fee.

They charge you a service fee when you change your plan with them? If thats true; that doesn't seem right.

well i guess you do get charged a 9.99 service fee. THat sucks you would think they would upgrade you to a higher plan for free since youll be paying more per month but apparently they don't

You might want to consider broadvoice if you want to save some cash. They allow you to bring your own device and pay 10 bucks a month for unlimited in-state calling. The cool thing about that is you can get a number in any state you want.

Could anyone tell us your experience w/ Broadvoice?
I was gonna switch to them but heard their service became worse after they switch from Global Crossing to someone else.
