I finally decided to try out VOIP after realizing how much i'd save a couple hundred a year, and was curious who currently has voip (or has tried it), what companies they went for (vonage, lingo, etc), and what their experiences were.

By VOIP, I don't mean as a secondary phone, I mean as a primary, it replacing your current phone.

Currently I use Lingo, which was rated pretty high by Wired Magazine. What do you use?

It'd be great to get some more participation in here. For the people with MagicJack, how's it been treating you thus far? Skype, is it a pain to setup? No LNP, right?

What phones do you use? Right now the thing that's keeping me from using VOIP is getting phone handsets around the house (kitchen, my office, living room, master bedroom at present) that work well and are easy to use.

Sunrocket then went to Teleblend when Sunrocket went away. Very minor issues that I can live with for $15 a month.

vonage, price has increased thanks to the asshat telecom taxes and significant distortion if I'm downloading something and talking at the same time, but still alot cheaper than standard phone service.

I had it with Comcast, it was fine.

I also currently have it with T-Mobile (Hotspot@Home). I don't think its quite as clear as the regular T-Mobile GSM service.

With Vonage I use my regular phones.

Skype. I use it every way possible, from my Axim to my PCs and laptops, to the pair of Linksys CIT400 standalone cordless phones. It's fantastic.

EDIT: And, yeah, GrandCentral rocks too!

Vonage, but I am about to terminate because they insist on billing me monthly to my credit card. I asked them why, and they couldn't give me a good reason. My credit score is superb and I've never missed a telecom payment in my life.

For those of you who don't know how Vonage works it's like this.

You find where the telephone line from the street that plugs into your house. Usually there's a box with two halves and you as the home owner can only open one side. Open it and disconnect that phone line.

Then take the phone adapter that Vonage gives you and plug it into your router/modem. Connect a phone line from the adapter to any wall plug into your house and now your whole house is wired. You can use your regular phones and caller ID works.

There was absolutely no configuring to do on the phone adapter for me. I just plugged it into my router. It as assigned an IP address and it connected to the Vonage service automatically.

At first Vonage will assign you a temporary phone number while they get your phone company to release your original number. Mine took about a week to do.

Having a website that shows all calls logged and voicemails is very convenient.

It also cost half of what AT&T did for me.
