VoIP users

i am fixin to switch from POTS to VoIP and am wondering what most people do about an answering machine/voice mail.

can the old fashioned POTS answering machine be used?

we currently have Sprint Voice Mail as part of the POTS package for local service, do the VoIP providers do something like that?

VOICEMAIL

Personalized voicemail is a service that allows callers to leave messages when you are not available to answer your phone. Yea, if you get the VOIP running through your normal houseline (or even if you split the line coming out of the voip box), you can run it into a regular answering machine.

All the VOIP providers give you free voicemail though.

Yep...Vonage here. I use their voicemail, and you can check it from any phone, your phone, or the internet. You can even download them as .wav's and save them if you want. It will also email you when you have one.

I use sunrocket.com (current thread in hot-deals forum: $199/year w/cordless phones bonus, NO other costs (setup, shipping, hardware, etc))

I personally use an answering maching, but surocket offers voice-mail, plus can email you the voice-message, just email you notification, or text-message that you have a voice-mail waiting. (Maybe some other combinations that I can't remember)

Vonage works exactly like a normal phone line...
sounds great too..
also included is thier VM system you can access from any PC or the phone itself

I use Vonage also. You can set the amount of seconds that you want the voicemail to pickup...so let's say you have an existing answering machine in your house that you want to use, you can set that to answer after 30 seconds lets say (or 4 rings) and set the Vonage voicemail to pickup after 60 seconds. That way, your home machine will pick up first and only calls that come in while you are on the phone, if you don't pick up the call waiting, will go to the Vonage voicemail.

as far as i know, YMMV with all voip providers.

that being said, check out sunrocket. there's a huge thread in hot deals with lots of good tips, $200/year with unlimited calling. SR also includes free voicemail and i believe they can send it to you via IM, SMS, email, or just thru the web interface.
