VoIP phone from cable company?

I'm thinking of finally dropping the landline and going with the digital phone service from my cable/internet provider. Anyone have experience with this type of service? Good, bad?

Does download/upload activity affect the phone conversation the way it does something like skype, ie, if I'm uploading or downloading some file, will it mess up a phone conversation (and vice versa)?

I have VOIP from ViaTalk, the service from most cable providers is over priced IMO...

bandwidth is never an issue

Have it with Cox and hate it with a passion. Their so called triple play does not include any type of phone features at all. Just a plain old dial tone.

Hmm.... I thought call waiting etc would be part of the deal, I'll need to check into it.

So when you're downloading a 4GB dvd.....errrrrr..... file at max speed (in my case, 7 mbit), it won't cause your phone conversation to get messed up? Is a certain amount of bandwidth reserved by the router or something?

I had it with optimum for a year and I never actually hooked up a phone to it.

I ordered it because of the triple play bonus, but after the trial rates went up after a year, it made more sense to cancel voip ($30/month) and pay the $5/month surcharge on the internet boost for not having triple play.

Charter wants 50 bucks a month for their VOIP phone service... fuck that. I'm paying $20/mo for Vonage and it works just fine with my Charter internet service.

I've used Viatalk for about 2 years, and haven't had problem either. I only had a 5/2 connection for most of the 2 years.

Holy overprice batman!

Do some/any of the voip providers give you a router or hardware that will prioritize your voice traffic over your other internet traffic so your call doesn't get borked when you're using a high-bandwith app? Say I'm watching a streaming netflix movie, which takes up a lot of bandwidth, I don't want my wife complaining that her call quality sux....

When downloading stuff from usenet, I pretty much max out my bandwidth and everything else (browsing etc) becomes noticably slower on every PC in the house. Unless there's some traffic prioritization going on, I can't see how that wouldn't mess up your phone convo as well...

I did have the triple play with Comcast before moving down to Alexandria and theirs did include all of the phone features. It's probably just Cox that sucks cox 😀

We have Optimum voice but are in the process of switching to Ooma.
I have it all set up just waiting for our number to port over.

If it were up to me we wouldn't have a land line at all but the SO wants one.

That's kind of where we've been for years -- I'm ready to get rid of the landline, but my wife doesn't feel comfortable with the digital phone services yet. I'd like to try one out, but call quality and reliability are critical.

I have it with the optimum triple play. Used to have Vonage. When the optimum special ended, I called to cancel the service but they extended the special rate so I still have it. My service here is great.

I also have a cell phone, a work cell phone, and my teen's cell phone, a land line would be overkill.

I have Comcast Digital Voice. The phone plugs into the modem rather than your router. It always works regardless of internet activity. The modem has a battery backup so it works during power outages. Voice quality is the same as a regular landline. It transmits address info to 911. Basically, I don't have any gripes.

We wouldn't have it but our cell phone service is spotty and even UMA is unreliable.
