I need to convert a VOB file to avi or mpeg. Someone in another forum suggested that I just rename the file to mpg, but that doesnt work. I'm trying to edit the video in sony vegas, and when I open either the file as a VOB or renamed to MPG, I dont have any audio to work with.

So does anyoene know a way around this? I just need a program that can convert that VOB to something that i can open in sony vegas, video and audio.

Thanks.

Something like VCDEasy should work to convert to VCD or SVCD.

What type of editing are you trying to do. What format do you want the final video to be?

The company I work for has this promotional DVD that they want me to be taking some clips from. The clips that I need to pull today are for a blog that my boss runs so they don't need to be very high quality but I'm thinking in the future they're going to want to use some of the stuff in a future DVD, so i'd like to keep the quality of the video as high as possible just in case i need to burn it back to DVD.

You DO NOT need to rename VOB to MPG in Sony Vegas. Just go to File > Import Media to import VOB files to Vegas. Just remember to select "All Files" in the "Files of type:" dropdown list. Now select the VOB file you want to import and click "Open". The VOB file will be imported to your Media Pool. Then drag the file into your timeline. You should see both audio and video in the timeline. Next go to File > Render as and select MainConcept MPEG. Click on Custom > Audio and ensure that "Include audio stream" is selected. Save the MPEG file and things should work out for you.

DVD shrink is an easy tool to crop the video down to only the part you want. Then feed the output into TMPGEnc
