VNC Connection Issues

I've been using VNC for about 8 years now and my current configuration of connecting my laptop to another laptop which acts as an HTPC has been around for about 3 years so there's not much in the way of surprises.

However something's come up that I can't figure out.

For starters my local IP is 192.80.x.x, I've never seen it be anything but 192.168.x.x, is that something to be concerned about?

Also can't get into my Cisco router using 192.168.1.1/192.168.0.1, or the listed default gateway of 192.80.0.65.

With my HTPC laptop set up as it always has been and using the IPv4 address I can't connect to it all with VNC.

Any ideas?

I've resetted the router and restarted my computer many times.

Strangely enough my Airplay where my iphone can play music through my receiver which has been working normally no longer works as well.

It sounds to me like you are somehow connecting directly to your ISP and not through your router any more. First, make sure the router is actually still plugged in and turned on. If so, it might have been switched to a bridged/access point mode instead of acting as a router, and in that case I would reset it and start over.

The 192.80.x.x addresses you are getting are PUBLIC IPv4 addresses, which means that your devices are communicating directly with your ISP's DHCP server. This is because your router is either no longer there, or no longer configured (or no longer functioning) properly.

Not sure what you mean by no longer there. I'm connected to it and the internet is working.

Any ideas on how to fix it? I just hard reset it, and now I'm just on an insecure wireless network because I still can't log into the admin settings.

What type of router is it? Maybe you need a new router. If you reset it by the rest button and still have the trouble something went south.

I think I know what happened. Some routers, their "WAN" ports, are really just a VLAN port on a switch. When the router dies, the VLANs, etc., don't get programmed, and then everything plugged into the WAN and LAN ports just acts like a dumb switch - ie. wide open. I think that's what has happened here.

Hate to say it OP, but your router is toast, and you need to purchase a new one. Also, all of your machines are wide open on the internet, and are not behind a NAT/SPI firewall that a router naturally provides. Hope you have your Windows software firewall enabled on all of the machines.

I just hard reset it, and now
...
I still can't log into the admin settings.

Yep, router is toast. It's not booting up, and programming the switch fabric.

You could always keep using it as a dumb switch, if you want, I guess. I would toss (recycle) it.
